Hiya
Just wondering, how many people have actually managed to kill CPUs? Like they had them overclocked, and one day they just decided not to boot up? Were there any syndromes before the CPU died? And how long have you been running an overclocked CPU before it died?
Thanks.
EDIT: And do you know why it died?

I killed an Intel 3.2 EE once time.... I dropped it on the floor and actually broke it. It was a day old. Sigh.
I've never fried one myself. CPU's are xtremely tough, if you follow the basic rules and have no hardware faults. The worst thing I've had happen is they stop OCing.... (both companies)
i killed a 3400DTR back about 1yr ago. i gues the MSI i was using was fruity cause it died rather easy. i think i was running like 3.2v on the memory and 1.8v on the cpu and it never made it into windows i hit f10 to exit and save and that was it poof the mb and the cpu died... other then that ive not killed many cpu's but im sure theres alot of guys in here that have :)

I killed lots of CPUs in a Shuttle AN50. I think everyone has though, I killed a 3000+ Barton back when it was new and worth using by giving it 2.1~2.2V
I had a 933 Coppermine die for seemingly no reason, it was running stock and sitting in the bios, then the machine turned off and wouldn't come on again.

I think the majority of deaths will be caused by IHS removal lol.
I had a CBBID Winnie that died one day from nowhere, PC wouldn't boot with it but with Venice PC booted OK. IHS was removed, I pumped through him 1.6~1.8v daily. Once I gave him 1.934v, there's somewhere a screenie of that in these forums. Never found out why it died but I don't care because it was the worst ocer I ever seen.
Then I took screwdriver and did this to him:
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=40093&stc=1
and that :stick:
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=40094&stc=1
No cpu plays on my nerves  I couldn't even get him stable at 2.6Ghz

I found this on a german forum. If i understood right is the result of trying an opteron 940 on an s939 mobo. Supposed to be a "modded opty 940". :nono:
Who ever did it saw for sure nice fireworks

thats a lie. all socket 940 cpus are ceramic(purple) that clearly is 939 with the green silicon pcb.

OPB has exactly the same picture, its an FX55 killed on a beta nF4 SLI-DR.

That is incorrect. All rev E Opterons are using the organic packaging

Bonus points for anyone who can post that pic. I about fell out of my chair when I saw that a couple months back.
Ture, that's OPB's Board and CPU.
I killed a 1700JIUHB. But don't know why. The CPU wasn't overclocked. Got it RMA'ed. Then I killed a Duron1400 Because of a bad waterblock.

I had a P4 2.26B that died from SNDS (Sudden Northwood Death Syndrome) @ 1.7v load. It didn't die completly but it was not stable anymore even at 1.6GHz.

I killed a 800MHz Duron about 4 years ago, I tightened up a waterblock w/o springs, and after a few runs, I decided it was a bit lose, and tightened the nuts a bit too much. Heard a dull crack and it was all over for that chip.
I also killed a JIUCB 1700+. I moded it into a mobile, and it worked great, after wards I wanted to unlocked higher multies, so I started to cut through the L6s, it posted one time, crashed on its way into windows, and never posted again. A day later someone on OCForums came up with a way to unlock upto x24 multi by connecting the 2nd L5 bridge... The irony... :sob:

Same here, well it was actually the wind that dropped it on the concrete floor, and it was only a P!!! 600 which ran for about a year 24/7 @ 888MHz 2V (The P3V4X held me back, even with 2.2V it wouldn't do 900...well I got into windows once but it BSOD'd within 5 minutes).
What happened: Running aircooled TEC (Kept CPU @ ~Ambient full load) no WU = Idle = ~6C = condensation, Idle without insulation = Problem when you're not at home, water leaked through V-Card onto NIC, NIC was fine (A clean PC helps as condensation doesn't conduct electricity well) V-Card seemed dead but the Quadro mod revived it (GF2 MX, hit the switch install new drivers and it was fine), Anyway this happened a couple of times and I ended up with oxidation problems, After I cleaned the CPU, MOBO and Slocket with some water and dishwasher soap and isopropyl alcohol I put them out on the balkony to dry, I watched them for a while to see if they didn't get blown away, well I was wrong, a couple of minutes after I went inside I heard a noise...the slocket and CPU were on the ground...not a great loss as I already wanted to buy a Tualeron back then.

The card should still be working in a PCI-E 1x and 4x slot if there is no other damage.

That pic is photoshopped and no way a card would still work if its connector was to be cut

I killed one 3.0C (30 capper) by trying to remove the heatspreader, i bent the whole thing and the damn IHS is still on there, i think i got owned. Ive also killed about 30 Pentium CPUs by throwing them against the back wall of my school.

Someone should try cutting off the pins on a cheap 939 cpu and cut them so that it will fit into a socket LGA775 and force it in and try to run it LMAO.
or you could try a socket 754 or try fitting a socket 939 into a 940 and running it.... hmm

Dumo, that is really bad :(
I was messing with an old PC I had a few days ago to see how far I could mess with the jumpers for an overclock. Ended up with that nice smelling "burnt electronics" odor. A Celeron supposed to run at 466 cannot do a whole lot more, ^.^

Not sure about cutting the card but you can run a pcie cards on 4x 8x slots I am currently running a X800gto2 on a dell sc420 board that has only got a 8x slot. http://www.tkdan.com/SC420/
