View Full Version : Air cooled results....anyone interested?

I'm looking for opinions here.
Folks that know me know that over the past few years I've focussed more on highly overclocked fully self contained gaming rigs than I have on pure benching rigs that consume an entire workbench. I've managed to put up a few ORB topping combinations as well as other competitive rigs which is a real feat when everything must fit in the case, be mobile, and be able to be run for hours on end.
That said, I'm in the process of putting together another self contained gaming rig that is comprised of the DFI Expert, FX 57 CABNE 0530, 2 7800GTX 512 cards in SLI, X-fire sound, 2 74G Raptors in RAID, plus a few other bits n peices. Ultimately, the parts will end up in my mildly modded Mach II and the cards will be water-cooled all bundled nicely in a self contained case. With BIOS tweaks, volt mods, and other tricks of the trade I'm sure it'll be a killer rig worthy of the first page on the ORB.
Here's the question. I was getting the itch to put all this stuff together in a plain jane case and see what kind of scores i might get with just air cooling. I don't know why, it just sounds like fun. I'm tempted by the simplicity of an air cooled beast this time around. Would anyone be interested in what air cooled scores could be made with a rig like this? If no ones cares, I'll just start prepping for phase change and water cooling. Just curious as to what you guys thought.

Definitely do some air. The more benches the better :D
But it would be interesting indeed since you hardly see such high end hardware being benchmarked without subzero cooling.

Okay :)
I'll slap the rig together tonight and get benching ala air cooled:banana:

I'd sure like to see it. I think there are just a whole lot of people at XS that are just on air.
I think you will be doing us a great service by putting a top shelf rig like your building on air. :woot:

Of course it would be great to see any elite XS members test their air skills. In the long term it wouldn't make much sense to give a FX-57 anything less than sub-zero cooling, but the air cooling tests could be very instructional for those who have budgeted far less for their cooling solutions.
I'm guessing the CABNE 0530 FX-57 will do about 3% better than the rest of the the air cooled CABNE 0530 Opterons. So I'm guessing we will see 3.1ghz 32M stable. Otherwise I expect the same - low volts and toasty temps. I'll guess 15.4K on 3DMark '05 since you'll probalby have a strong pair of 7800GTX from ASUS.
I'm a little curious about the degree of "plain Jane-ness" (Janeyness?) of the case. If you pulled it out of a dumpster behind some office building, that might present too much of a challange to the OC. A Cheming like mid-tower ATX case with no mods or leaf blower attached would be just about right. :D

If you want a real air cooling challenge, try O/C a modern prescott, you know - one of the LGA775 series.
I can get a 1.2ghz O/C on my 630 inside a case with ambients of 25-26 C, completely stable for all day use.
But will be interesting to see how you go with the setup you named in the first post of this thread. :)

 What..... I'm sure he'll do alot better then that. My stinky little 144CABNE 0530 did that. I'm guessing with his skills and that cpu more like 3200+ spi 32m....maybe a wr. I'm really looking forward to seeing this, hurry please.

looking forward for it....
air is nice cuz most of the ppl doesnt have sub zero rigs, so we can see how far we can go with air :)

Sorry for the delay....been doing kiddie patrol all day today. I managed to get everything into the case and fired up. These are just a few pics for starters, and a few benchmarks for stock oem starting points. I'll be tweaking things over the next few evenings.

Here's some initial scores. Nothing to write home about, but not bad for a fully enclosed case with stock heatsinks. This is with no driver or BIOS tweaks yet. No volt mods. Just straight up assembled and lightly OC'd. Its amazing what you can get right out the box now days.

Looks very good so far. Thanks for taking the time and effort to do this.
It's amazing how the video cards are such a big factor in 3d benching. Even a average cpu with the cards you have make great scores.
I am looking forward to seeing how far you can tweak this from just putting in the hardware to final tweaking.

WTG man. Nice results. Do you stick on boxed air or do you go over to better air cooling?
Keep going.
Well, there are different types of air, can be very cold air when it is like -20C outside :D You can put hardware on some table near opened window or in garage and it would still be air :) Cpu temps would be like 10-30C. I personally got like 16C idle with SD core. Don't know if anyone has ever got below 10C on air.

Looks like a super strong gaming rig. I can't ID the 2x1024 memory. The heatspreaders look kinda orange. I think only Team X has that color but they're not common in the states.
If you find time to do a memory bandwidth screenie, please post it. Thanks.

mdzcpa interesting thread I am all about these kind of results myself.
Still a work in progress but will be done within a week once I get the final piece.

Here is my FX57 on *AIR" only. This is 32mb PI stable, OCCT stable, and so far, game stable.

Sorry I wasn't able to complete the mission. I had to take an unexpected tour of duty out of town for work 2 weeks ago. I've been back a few days and I went right to work on the phase change conversion. I needed to get up and running for the holiday season were I traditionally do a lot of gaming:)

i can get my X2 to idle around the ambient temp by undervolting it to 1.125v, so if i can get my ambient temps down, i should be able to achieve less than 10c.
btw mdzcpa, it's all a great idea. Self contained systems are so much more practical than these ones spread out on the bench, for 'normal users'.

It's gonna take a lot more than that to keep load temps down on an x2. Luckily I've got -40C ambient to bench in...j/k :p: :

lol you lucky bugger. What the highest OC on that thing?
lowest i've ever got it to under load is 19c, but that was a pretty cold day. I'm sure if i could get it down to 0c in here, tightened the water block a bit, and had a lucky break, i could get it to load 10c or so. But we digress....

Um, @ 0C wouldn't your water turn into ice? LOL....BTW, I never did get a chance to max the cpu out since it started cold-bugging on me.....
Sorry mdzcpa, I'm done with the thread-jack ;)

no for various reasons
the water is moving, it has water wetter (so its less than pure) and the cpu would probs keep it heated.
DONT REPLY
back on topic for real now...sorry

lol...no problem. This thread was pretty much done anyway:D I didn't follow through with my air build. So feel free to chat away!
