I'm new to the computer building thing and might have jumped in over my head.

I have the following processor: AMD Opteron Model 148 Socket 939.

I also have the following Mobo: ASUS A8N5X with the following specs:

-AMD Socket 939
- NVIDIA® nForce™ 4
- PCI Express Architecture
- Serial ATA RAID
- Gigabit Ethernet
- AI NOS
- Precision Tweaker

Should I expect any problems? Based on previous posts in this and other forums about the likeness of the Athlon 64 processors and this one with Socket 939, I think that I should be OK.

Some support from the experts of this forums that I am good to go would be greatly welcomed!

Thanks!

Hi sbasspike, welcome to the forum!

I haven't used that board myself. I don't think you should expect any problems from a compatibility perspective though. Technically, the board prolly does not "officially" support Opterons, but that hasn't stopped anyone else here, so I wouldn't worry :) I'm sure it will work fine.

I read here for at least 1-3 hours every day (but rarely post), and have gotten alot of good info from these folks. I recommend reading all the stickies and guides available 1st before diving in. Once you do start your build though, if you do come across a specific problem or issue, this is prolly a good place to seek help. Just be sure to list the specific problem in full detail, and also list all your components too.

Best of luck on your new computer :)

If your Motherboard supports Athlons 64 with San Diego Core, then it should support all Single Core Opterons with no trouble because they're the same with another name. Worst thing that may happen is that your Motherboard unproperly identifies the Processor.

Thanks for the input folks!

I am glad to report that everything went JUST fine.

I still need to do all of the driver updating for GPU, etc, but the board properly identified the CPU as an Opteron 148 without any problem.

Now it's time to play!

Thanks again.
