Might give me a chance to catch up then ;)
Just moved a gig of ram down onto the "VM Machine" aka our MP3 server and added another 4 agents along with it ;) Not giving up on me slice of pie that easy ;)

Its ok, when that rig goes back up, it will have 2 gigs, so i will double all of the clients as is.. I wish we could get more people crunching though. Roster shows a lot of members but no return work.

What system are you running as you're dimes machine?
With 7VM's (8 agents in total) the machines sitting at ~ 90% load all the time.... its only a 1.4 mobile celly, but even so...
How is your's coping with 10+ agents :O

Dont be too certain of your pie, Im working on increasing again....slowly but surely....the PIII army of dimes will return......lol
Most of my production at the moment is done when Im at home, which isnt much at the moment and on only one rig......

I can run 10 agents off 1 gig of ram on a Win2k install. I dont care what anyone says, WinXP is a resource hog. CPU Utilization is a tiny 3% with a A64 3200+ not even overclocked. I would like to try 64Bit XP, but i dont know how well the Dimes Agents would run. That would affford me to run 4 gigs of ram and not waste it.

Well if i get my replacement ram from OCZ tomorrow, i can remove the ram for this workstation and toss it back in the rig thats down and be back in business. Ill just have to wait for the Mushkin to come back before im at 2 gigs. You guys have 24 hrs to make your move, lol.

Its gonna take more than 24hours......lol
Ive never run an xp VM 2000 is the way ahead....low mem usage, I reckon with a gig and a workstation that isnt used much u could get 15VMs running. I have played with damm small linux and that seems very good, but I cant quite crack it.
The thing that annoys me is my a64 @ 2600mhz gig of ram that sits here doing nothing coz of leccy costs at home.
I may move my xeon to work.....hmmm

I tried VM but it was running like a pig. I had 96mb memory to it on XP SP2.. it was intolerably slow. I got fed up and removed it. This isn't a slow machine either. OC'ed 3000+ with 2GB of ram and a 100GB SATA drive on a broadband connection with 782 up and 10 meg down.. I just could not watch that thing ooze along at a snails pace. yuk. Sorry guys, I will live with my one crappy box over in the corner running the client.

10 is pushing it on a gig with a Win2k install. Thats with each client at 64 megs. 15 wouldnt work, you would have serious page filing and eventually, either HD corruption or major BSODs.

You have something else going on with your machine than. If it was running like a pig, you were doing to much as a workstation. 2 gigs, you could have run 10 clients and been fine if you had a dual core. One is better than nothing. :toast:

I only run 5 vms on 1GB of RAM as I also run 4 instances of D2OL at the same time. Drops my D2OL output by about 20% for that machine is the only downside. :(

Well the most I managed on a PIII450 with 256mb running winxp + d2ol was 4 vms of windows 2000, it was dog slow, but I didnt use the box for anything else, it ran for well over a month, never crashed never rebooted and was fine. Took a little while to RDP to it, but it got there in the end.
Depends on what you mind disk swapping. Ive seen some crazy installs over the years, where servers have only had 128mb yet have been runnign exchange etc, they are well over usage but they never crashed, just kept on going day in, day out, slowly but surely.
Its worth tweaking the OS like your going benching, as you can get 2000 down to about 55mb ish in use , then you can assign it under 50mb in vm and its not bad.
Are we talking virtual PC or VMware. I run VMware, havent really played with virtual PC.
I take it you have had a play with this setting as well.

Im only running folding @ home right now @ instances as consoles, could I run more and be ok with it?
Meaning would it bost my output or what? Id like to be able to put out close to a grand a day
most ive done so far was like 600ish
oh I have X2 @ 2.5 and 2 gigs of ddr 400@500 :toast:

I set my disk space at 1.5 gigs with 64 meg of ram per client in VMware and it works pretty damn good. If i tweaked win2k a little more, i could probably get away with 32mb of ram, but after playing around with it for a week, it only gained me two additional clients and the trouble wasnt worth the effort for me.
I have one X2 running two F@H clients and 10 clients. As long as you have the ram, you will be ok Phil.

How many VM's can i run you think on a barton 2500+ with 512mb ram,hd is 3gb,is that ok or is it better with,i have to look at it very good becaus i dont know s**t about vm's:).
The 2500+ barton would be a dedicated cruncher,or is it better to run lets say 15+1=16 vm's on it and notting else,or 5 vm's and D2OL,i dont know, can someone give me some advise.

Depends on your resource usage. 8-10 is maxing out a 1 gig system.. Processor speed really isnt as important to Dimes as with having RAM. So, i would say 5-6 is what you should get, that includes the client running on the machine as well as the VM clients.

Your HD will be the limiting factor. You wont get much on there. Also to run more VMs make the host OS windows 2000 pro and then cut down the services. You might be able to squeeze in one more. Have a look in the VM sticky or just drop me a line if you need any help on the VMs.

You all are using Win2K? Probably why mine was so damn slow.. XP Pro is a whale. I wonder if 98 would work at all??

Running 2 Nlited XP installs on 72mb ram no worries, could get away with 64tbh, but gives a little "breating room"
Have 7 "normal" XP installs running on 96mb on the other machine no probs, they're a little slow but seem to run DIMES fine

LOL, 98 would crash bro, besides, its networking system is a joke. Stick with an NT based kernal. I might even try an NT 4.0 install myself.

Back to XP on 128mb.. 98mb was just slow as tar. On the final install now.

For installs I always whack up the mem as much as possible as it saves waiting.

I managed to squeeze 4 VM's all running DIMES, and one dimes for the machine running the VM's with only 320 MB of ram on a P3 500MHz cpu.. and they're all running WinXp. You gotta do better than this :P

You hit virtual memory territory.. For running 5 VMs, your production isnt very high... Look at my stats, i think my numbers speak for themself.

Well, if we use haltech's modded OS that uses ~60mb while running dimes (for arguments sake), 320 divided by 60 = 5. If its dedicated, I see no problem. If it wasnt a modded xp, then yea, you'll run into virtual memory and it will be very slow.

I know the numbers are low, I made thes vms just some hours ago.. I'm setting up 5 to 10 new ones this weekend :) The numbers will change, check them again tomorrow!
Of course im hitting the virtual memory, but dimes/java is running in RAM so it won't affect the performance. Alltho I get few answers from the dimes pings.

yeah, I was running XP with 3 XP VMs with D2OL running on it, with 512mb of RAM, and it was going pretty slow. All the VM's time was about three hours off.

Your supposed to go to performance and see how much everything is using, then add like 10 for load reasons. I've had it to 90 before and thought that was low. Maybe I can get rid of more things.
