I have a pretty good computer, but i can only play bf2 on medium/low graphics, except high models, and 2x anti-aliasing. If i go any higher i get crazy lag.
My system specs are:
Intel P4 3.0GHz socket 478
2 ata Hard drives
a recently installed Radeon x800xl
Sound Blaster Audigy Value sound card
Gigabyte GA-8IPE 1000 Motherboard
350watt Enermax Power supply
Anybody have some suggestions, or ideas?

Oops, i forgot to add that. I have 1024mb of ddr kingston memory, and 3-3-3-8 timings. I have four 256mb sticks.

2x1gb is even better.

it's not your cpu, it's not your memory.
I have a P4 3,2ghz, 1 gig kingston ram, leadtek 6800GT, and i play at all high except for 2 or 3 options which are on medium. I even play with LIGHTNING on HIGH (even though it's not recommended by anyone) and average 60 fps. Seriously.

Ok, i have two hard drives, each have a tiny 2mb of cache, might this affect bf2 at all?

i have a 7800gt and 1gb ram i run 1280x960 average 85fps all high but textures it caused serious lag
after i get 2gb of ram i can run all high and turn on 2xaa and get the same or more fps so... maybe get more ram and a 7800gt lol

Advicing someone to get a 7800GT just like that is just dumb.
Make sure you're spyware-free, also defragment your harddrive. Maybe you need to reinstall motherboard and graphics card drivers aswell.
If not, get some more ram, if that's possible :p

my ex-friend had an x800xl and was in the same position. bf2 is pretty hard to run considering there isnt really much eye candy. have you looked at the tweakguide for it?

I had an XL but I upgraded to a GTX. It was still choppy. So I upgraded to 2 gigs. Problem solved. For the most part, you can't take the textures setting alone off of medium unless you have more than 1 gig of ram. I proceeded to wonder how much higher I would have been able to go with the XL if I had the ram, but it was already gone. Textures on high and 1gb do not mix in this game. True I'm running 1920*1200, so maybe with the ram the XL will be enough for you... not sure.
Btw, MartinX, he could have just been kidding you know. A couple of mediums isn't exactly the best advice either. One of them is textures, or you are lagging.
BF2 isn't very cpu limited. But AMD will provide better minimum frames and so on.

I'm playing BF2 perfectly fine with only 1 gig of ram though. I play with lightning, textures, and a few other things on high, and let dynamic lightning, effects on medium. I even play with 4xaa, but on a rather small resolution, namely 1024*786.

Put textures on medium and throw some highs in. Graphics cards draw choppy low framerates. They don't really "lag" so to speak. Or Jump. I think you are feeling page file hits. Let us know how you are getting along!

I'm playing @ 1152x864 with 2xaa and everything on high except for dynamic shadows/lighting. Here are my specs:
Athlon 64 3000+
MSI K8N Neo Platinum
512 MB Corsair DDR400 PC3200
Maxtor Ultra 250 GB 7200 RPM 8 MB
Maxtor 80 GB 5200 RPM 2 MB Cache
Asus Radeon 9800 XT 256mb
500w Ultra X-Connect PSU
I'm guessing the bottleneck is your processor because I have less ram and a older video card and it still runs pretty good. Online this game allways starts out a bit choppy then after a minute or so its smooth. Make sure to off dynamic shadows/lighting.
