:woot: :) hey guys,
my specs are in my sig, just wanna show some ppl some tweaks i had shown to me.and btw ppl who say 1 gig is enogh for bf2 are wrong.open tsk manger, fire up bf2,then go to desktop with bf2 running.see how it takes 1 1\4 gigs of ram to run.now ppl would say ok 2 gigs are enough then(i guess)but i took it a step further on my latest rebuil i got 2 1gig kits of ocz platium(aeneon chips) running at 1:1 400mhz 2.6 volts cas 2-3-2-5 t2 and true dual channel mode.call ocz if u dont belive me cause i callled them directly last week when i installed all 4 gigs to setup and thats what u get using amd 64 rev e. chips and above.as for my setup i currently allocate 2 of the 4 gigs solely to bf2 and its simply amazing :slobber: directions below--

------------bf2\memory tweaks\hl2-------------

This tweak lets you fine tune your memory for better performance. You need at least 256MB of RAM to do this.

1: Go to "Start", then "Run", and then type in "Regedit"

2: Locate the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSe ssion ManagerMemory Management

3: Double Click "DisablePagingExecutive", select "Decimal" and put a 1 in the blank. This allows windows to keep data in memory instead of paging sections of RAM to the hard drive, Click OK

4: Double Click "LargeSystemCache", select "Decimal", and put a 1 in the blank. This allows XP kernal to run memory (improves system performance a lot). Click OK

5: Create a New "Dword" by right clicking in the "Memory Management" Folder. Once the "Dword" is created, name it "IOPageLockLimit". Double click it and select "Hexadecimal", put a 4000 in the blank if you have 128MB of RAM, set it to 10000 if you have 256MB of RAM, or set it 40000 if you have 512MB of RAM or more. This tweak will speed up your diskcache. Click OK

6: Reboot for changes to take effect

This tweak lets you overall boost your performance. (Tweaking the Swap File) You need 256MB of RAM or more to do this.

1: Select "Run", then "Start", and then type in "msconfig.exe"

2: Select the "SYSTEM.INI" tab

3: Add "ConservativeSwapFileUsage=1" under the "386enh" section

4: Click "OK" and reboot windows for the changes to take effect

This tweak will decrease boot time and make XP A LOT faster.

1: Go to "Start", then "Run", and then type in "Regedit"

2: Locate the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSe ssion ManagerMemory ManagementPrefetchParameters

3: Double Click "EnablePrefetcher", set it to "Decimal" and put a 3 in the box

4: Click "OK" and reboot windows for the changes to take effect

Set the heapsize- (great performance boost) This tweak allows the hl2.exe and bf2.exe to use a exact amount of memory.not sure if other or older games support this. q3,et etc use com_hunkmegs for this same effect, check your game to see if this tweak applies.

1: Click right on the icon that you use to start hl2 or bf2(playonline 1 i used)

2: Find the target box

3: Go to the end of the line, and add -heapsize

4: After -heapsize add the following numbers for the amount of RAM you have:

128MB of RAM- 16384

256MB of RAM- 65536

512MB of RAM- 262144

1GB of RAM- 524288

2GB of RAM- 1048576

So if you had 1GB of ram, it would look like: -heapsize 524288

before any gungho admin decides that this thread does not belong here i disagree being i had so much trouble getting this info, that other ppl whatever comapny and amout of ram they use and play bf2 or hl2 these tweaks are memory related and need to be shared,if this thread is moved i will not post here or at any forums no longer then.i actually hope this helps ppl and performance like it amazed me......i was blown away with the difference...have a good weekend all -frag on railmeat :) :woot:

Does it use more than 1.25 after you allocated 2gb?

thank you <3

setting a heapsize for the game RESERVES that much memory specifically for the game

thanks for the tips railmeat, and although I agree these are memory related tweaks, they also happen to be windows performance tweaks (and game specific tweaks). Not sure if this thread will stay here, but it would be a good thread to start a good discussion on other memory/OS/game tweaks.

As an addenum to your heapsize notes, you can also adjust another heapsize value (for quake3 at least) although I cannot remember the exact command. Half-Life 1 and all its mods, as well as pretty much any game based on the quake2 or quake3 engine all support heapsize adjustments. Also, you can adjust your heapsize higher or lower than the values you have suggested. For example, you have suggested 16mb (16384/1024) for 256mb ram, which is probably good enough for half-life 1 pre 1.0.1.0 patch, but after that (and since the advent of steam especially!) its not nearly enough. So, you're not wrong by any means but other values like 32mb would help and people should know they are not strictly limited to the values you have given ;)

Have you been able to surpass the 3gb limitation of WinXP with ServicePack 2? With SP1 you could enable all 4gb by changing a setting, but the change no longer works with SP2 so the most than any one program can utilize is 3gb.

Thanks for the tips but except for the heapsize (and maybe thats just me 'cos i'm only a casual gamer and don't really need it) they were known and used for ages.

if this thread is moved i will not post here or at any forums no longer then.

lol, great tip this one is:

6: Reboot for changes to take effect

This tweak lets you overall boost your performance. (Tweaking the Swap File) You need 256MB of RAM or more to do this.

1: Select "Run", then "Start", and then type in "msconfig.exe"

2: Select the "SYSTEM.INI" tab

4: Click "OK" and reboot windows for the changes to take effect

Anyways, my aquamark3 score took a nosedive of 13k, and i cant get it up to normal anymore, disabling the added thing doesnt seem to do the trick, cant i just erase that line out of the sys.ini alltoghether so i can choose "normal" start up procedure ?

anyways, the second tip SUCKS (for me)

edit* erasing doesnt do anything, what am i missing ?

oh jezus christ, dumbass language filter won't even let me post a screenshot of my desktop ....:banana::banana::banana:, now i actually have to rename it to "i love beautifull flowers yay!" or something so this board won't put those censoring banana's in .. because god forbid, someone would use a word that is more common then "the" or "and" ... shiver me mittens! I am not very happy right now, yay!

yes u can..and as i thought i cant post anywere without admins leaving it up....its memory related sorry its not about frying up your sticks on 3.3 + volts but these tweaks helped alot of my friends and do the powertrip thing and remove it if u must....really sad

yes it does very much so if your in a huge fire fight and on 64 plyer servers...

what operating system does your friend have running ?
I did some googling and appearantly this tip is for windows operating systems before windows 2000..

I am not sure what you mean by "powertrip" but i think you misunderstood me a little, just want to say that the second tip might not be so handy for XP users since it made my computer very slow, and deleting the added line doesnt un do it (no swapfile usage untill physical memory is all out of room) ...

I apologize for being pedantic but, is that from observation from having played during a huge fire fight with 64 players or what you're expecting during such a situation?

Railmeat , i owe you an apologie ...

The tip might work fine, it's just that i am a complete IDIOT ... In fact, im going to try it again ....

I'm really to embarassed to say what was wrong, but i will tell you it had absolutely nothing to do with a swap file

Well....this was an evening well spent, i shouldnt be near computers really

So why would you forcfully want the game to use 4gb of ram ?

To me thats just stupid it runs without 1 hiccup on 1.5gb for me i dont see why this is needed, am i missing something here ??

lol I dont trust these "optimisers" anymore. They have yet to do me any good and I have tried soooo many of them. I always get results similar to game's. Eveeyrthing start being very slow. In an xtreme case I forgot what I changed and had to reinstall windows to fix it.

the game is fine on 1gb or memory, all that matters is your video card people you could probably run it on 512mb

I dunno, leaving all the settings maxxed out I can see a big diffrence between a 1 gig kit and a 2 gig kit when running the game. I`d hate to try it with a 512 kit.

many reviews have proved that specially BF2 doesn't require the best vga card to run maximized @ 1280x1024 since even my card can do it @ AA4x but since they all proved that every map in has a size around 1.1~1.2 Gb so running the game on a 1GB kit only will not load all of the map at once so when u r moving inside the game u can noitce that the game hangs for a few moments while unloading the current place u r leaving and loading the place u r moving to on the ram
