I posted this in another thread, but thought it needed a thread of its own. Anyone know how to mount a naked opty with a Zalman 7700? I took the IHS off of my opty today and took off some of the resistors next to the core while doing it. Thank god the cpu still works but ambient temps are still the same and load temps have gone up from 56-59 to about 60-63. I put 4 thin pieces of cardboard on the corners of the cpu, but the heatsink still wobbles around a bit. Any ideas? Also, what exactly do those resistors next to the core do? I took 4 of those off while taking off the IHS.

you should be still able to mount the 7700 on the core - I'd recommend going Ceramique vs AS5. I have mounted a 7700 on a naked FX57 andon a naked X2, but it is a very loose fit. A better option would be to find a couple of motherboard standoffs screw them in the base and then to mount the screws of the hold down in.

Yeah I chipped 3. I have a 7000Cu. Just bend the mounting brackets until it is tight enough (if its not tight enough a number of things will happen 1) Reset due to heat, 2) Load temps will jump heaps and 3) You can feel it not sitting right).

They are actually capacitor packs that help take away voltage fluctuations.

Oh man, you are so right about all 3 of those. Hopefully bending the brackets will work, but that might make the holes for the screws not line up. Hmm, I guess I'll have to give it a try to find out. Thanks for the input.
