View Full Version : Where is a faster clock speed usable?

I know we get higher benchmarks with higher clocks on the CPU, but is there really any signifcant difference in gaming between an AMD 64 2.5Ghz clock and a 3.0Ghz clock. Which games would this give you a faster frame rate on? I can get 3.0 plus out of my chip by upping the voltage but do I really get much benefit other that the fun factor of doing it? I can easily tell tell a diffence when I overclock my 7800 GT but I don't see much of a difference with the CPU OC.

i noticed a massive increase in performance on games going just 600 mhz up on my x2 3800.
It was like the cpu was holding my gfx card back.
Plus editing and transcoding is faster too so i dont really understand your question tbh
A faster cpu makes things faster its simple really :)
some games are more gpu limited than cpu limited and vice versa

I've mostly been playing F.E.A.R. and the performance test doesn't show any difference when I clock at 2.5 or 3.0. I guess this game is limited by graphix card.

yeah fear in particular is more gpu limited than cpu limited. :)
However you will notice higher fps in games like far cry...well i did anyhow

I've got Far Cry, I just haven't played it in a while. I'll test it out and see how much a few hundred Mhz difference makes.

well, if you're using D2OL, it can make a difference. That's why we try to get every mhz we can out of our stuff in there. You should try it out. :)

I did notice with my setup that I was able to turn up my resolution quite a bit on BF2 going from 2200 to 2664 with my 3500+

a 300MHz overclock is noticeable to me, as that is what i have...any overclock is good though...it all adds to performance, even if you cant notice it
