i just installed SuSE 10 on my laptop because i wanted to learn Linux and i am also running D2OL on it.
my laptop is a Dell XPS Gen 1 with a 3.4EE and i am only getting ~50 canidates per day from it. when i had XP installed on it i was getting ~140 per day, WHY.
I plan on leaving linux on my laptop i just want better performance from it,
Am i running the wrong distro. or something? I tried Fedora 4 and it did not play well with my laptop and i also tried to install Gentoo (HaHa) I am a NOOB at Linux and i do not see that happenig for a while.
What should i try? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

During the build of one of my new DX rigs (which I plan to both have running Gentoo Linux), I'll do a complete install of Linux, Win2003server, and WinXPpro to see which does best with 4 instances of dbench. Just waiting on the (overdue) HDs to arrive. Full results will be posted here. Not sure yet if I'll compare different stage installs.
Best help I can provide for Gentoo is here (http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=1&chap=7#doc_chap1). Granted, it's not "hands-free" unless you do the genkernal stage 3 install.

I think i figured it out, the problem was/is that SuSE sucks. It is a very bloated version of Linux with many processes running in the background, but it is great for a Linux noob like me to learn on so i am keeping it installed.
But i found a way to run D2OL from my Flash Drive with a bootable version of linux on it. :woot:
What i did was burn an .iso CD of Damn Small linux(DSL) and create a bootable flash disk from it, I then booted to my flashdisk and installed D2OL.
I was very easy and works very well. Even for a Linux Noob like me. The total space used was less than 100mb on my flash drive with 2 instances of D2OL installed and 500 canidates of work downloaded each.
If anybody is interested in a guide on how to do this i can go into more detail, even though it is easy the directions for DSL are about as clear as muddy water and it took me a couple of hours to figure it out. Once i figured it out it was a very easy process.

If I can do it, ANYONE CAN :D Use me as a guinea pig (eyes 1 gig flash drive :D )
Do you need to have linux installed or can you boot off the CD and do this just from there. WE are all looking for the least amount of work required (lazy sobs :slap: )
So GUIDE GUIDE GUIDE :D  :woot: (please)

If you use the SMP Kernel. You'll see 2 processors :)
