Yeah, whats up with teh new trend in gaming...i remember when the developers took their time and didnt set unrealistic deadlines, a time of games that were actually released after they had been tested and re-tested to ensure that the funal product was satisfactory and ran without teh need of all the random updates. If you ask me the introduction and wide availibility of broad-band connections is the culprit...why wait until you finish a product when you can release a pretty much beta version and patch it up in the following weeks

and the tweaks worked like a dream...
A little explanation here: (http://www.tweakguides.com/COD2_10.html)
Update: Earl Hammon, Jr from Infinity Ward has written to me to explain the r_gpusync issue. Basically the game's developers are aware of the additional FPS possible when r_gpusync is disabled (set to 0), however because this setting controls the synchronization of the CPU and GPU (your graphics card(s)), disabling this can also introduce input (mouse/keyboard) lag. This is because your input can at times be processed by the CPU faster than it can be drawn on screen. So on balance they chose the default of r_gpusync = 3 to maintain synchronization while still giving good performance. The same situation (input lag) can occur if the 'Optimize for SLI' or r_multigpu setting is enabled.
BTW, has anybody tried this on an ATI card?

Haha, setting r_gpuSync to 0 actually gave me major fps boost and didn't slow down my keyboard or mouse. Great for me!
