desktop frozen please help...

I don't know what I did but I came home today and booted my system. When I tried to access the start menu my pointer turned into an hourglass. The start menu wouldn't respond, as well as the rest of the taskbar. I've even tried to access the desktop icons and I still get no response ..... I have tried running in safe mode and I get the same results. I don't have anymore system restore points because I tried to repair using windows repair install and when I log off I get a "explorer.exe is still running, end now?" msg

can anyone please help me? :confused:

mine is doing the same thing. i usually kill explorer under task managler and run it again. that fixes it until the next time which can be weeks apart.
