I see people do this all over the web. Why?

I don't know if it's the batch number they are hiding (I don't know what the batch number is on A64's since I switched to Intel (XEONS BABY))

but it is to still get warranty. They know AMD is watching, they know Intell is watching and I believe it is so that if they kill the chip (like say a FX57 of 1200 dollars) they can still send it back without their number being noted down so they don't have any warranty left :)

It's an RMA thing. You wouldn't understand.

Oh, I think do... :stick:

In early chips is because most of their perfomance information are under embargo...

NV at least has a DB with the cards they giveout to press & influential guys.

Because they are paranoid if they need to RMA it, that some AMD dude would actually go around and record the seriels of overclockers and such. Kinda crazy. It's a damn image(not easily searchable), I would hate that guys job. :p:

possibly the dumbest thing ive heard all day............................its really easy actually to record it...they have a database of all batches shipped....then when someone RMA's a chip....they mark that it has been RMA'd....so no one can RMA a dead chip thats already been RMA'd

Ah, but wouldn't AMD check the batch number when they receive it?

I know you do, I was being silly making fun of those stupid bumper stickers.

absolutely what i was thinking. it wouldn't make much sense if they
didn't do this, but have a list to compare the actual chips batch #
against.
but maybe there's cunning people out there, that clean their chips
of their original markings and stencil the new "to-be-rma'd" ones on
there. is there people that pull stuff like that??? pathetic

Dude don't go there. :nono:

What you said practically has nothing to do with what I said. The single most popular reason you'll see an image like that is when overclockers are blocking the seriel number on their jpegs. AMD knows where there chips ago. My point, which you don't touch on AT ALL, is I doubt they have someone watching xtremesystems... going hey, lets mark this seriel so when and IF Mr. "texuspete00"s RMA comes in we can stick it to him, because we've found an overclocking thread on it. In people's OC threads, and also in their "hey check out my new gear" threads, they block the batch in case they may have to RMA it down the road. Regardless of any side talk, this is why the JPEGS are blacked out! Personally I think scouring forums, would be a waste of man power and AMD doesn't do it. It's my opinion, and it's not that stupid. Maybe blocking it makes people feel better in a "better safe than sorry" sort of way. That's my theory of why they are doing it anyway. But if what I said is the dumbest thing you've heard all day, you must know a lot of smart people.

Maybe I skipped some details and it was confusing what I was talking about, but don't borderline flame me. It just sucks to be pretty old-school and taken for a fool. If I say anything that sounds super stupid, it was probably mis-read or I spelled it out badly. Sorry if asking you to read this in PM came out rude, but know I'm smart damnit! :p:

I heard its so someone doesnt counterfiet cpus or change the number to the number your cpu is and RMA it and lock you out of your warrenty

The one explanation that makes the most sence so far is paranoia. Unfounded paranoia I may add. How the heck anyone could pull that off... they'd have to be one very talented SOB.

how the hell could anyone produce nearly-unspottable athlon XP 3200s? its been done; relabelling an IHS isn't that tough.

whoever did that must be retarded also....that square @ the bottom left is a serial code....it will ID the batch
