any reccomendations on good parts to use? specific brands/ models of things?
just for kicks, let's start with compressors.
i don't know too many names, but danfoss, tecumsah, and matushiita seem to be pretty common. so i guess we can start with that and go on from there :)

I would say think about getting the tools first, you cant build anything without some very necesarry tools....

all pritty good, a 1/3Hp compressor should give some nice temps.

Everything? :P
BTW, I prefer imperial tubing cutter over rigid..and 4 valve manifold which aids in faster vacuuming and better isolation of atmosphere from purging, vacuuming, and than charging cycle. One thing not mentioned that would be really nice is quick disconnect fittings for manifold as well..

Like it or not, anything getting extreme is gonig to cost you money :)
I've repeated it many times but to do it properly and legally, you need to spend hefty amount of money on tools, equipments, etc. Lot of people disagree with me but I wonder if they ever worry about EPA fine and punishment which I just can't afford. 2-3k is nothing compare to the fine to put it simply.

The standard parts for the singlestage you certain need to buy. For my single stage, I found a nice compressor with condensor and stuff for free. The other parts (evap, drier, tubing, isolation, schraders) I can get from an other phasechange builder.
Then you need the tools. The cheap part are the tools like pipe cutter, pipe bender and flaring/swaging tools. But you also need to braze and evacuate the system and so on. A vacuum pump and a good brazing set does cost a little bit more. I've got luck, my nephew can braze and fill the system for me because he works by a A/C shop. So, to cut on costs, try to find someone that will help you and already have the tools you need.
