Well I tried to run dual instances of D2OL on my Dell Dimension 3.2C Northy at work. It ran for about 1 hour before it overheated and re-started. I never had a PC do that before... I even modded this Dell to have (2) 120mm fans and no side case...lol...I had to back it down to 1 instance. My Temp probe reported a max of 109F then it rebooted...or tried to anyway. I had to shut it down and let it cool off for awhile.

I was assigned a new node #...Do I merge this into my new team? XS_TheCollective?

1 instance is plenty on the laptop :)
Have you saved your original node.prp if you have use it, if not checkout#7 (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?p=560629#post560629)
Saving node.prp will help cut down on the # of dead nodes you have as an example i have 5 nodes listed only 1 is active.

Heater, A dimension isn't a laptop, it's a desktop. You could probably e-mail a node from your x2 to yourself and replace the one you have on your dell with that one.

I doubt it was overheating that caused your PC to restart. It might be the crappy PSU or ram.

It may have been the heat i think, i ran D2OL for roughly 6 months on my Dimension 8300 with a 3.0C and X800 Pro (that obviously didnt come stock) and i had no restarts at all. The ambient in my house is always very low (~55f) in the winter and that is mainly when i fold.

It's a stock PSU...and some off brand ram...It was running 2 instances of D2OL and boy was it getting hot!!! My temp probe read 109F...then it wouldn't restart, I had to shut it down for awhile. One instance and it's ok.

Does anyone know if an after market cooler would fit on that? Not sure about the mobo, if it has standard holes and what not, being a dell

i would need the model number but if it is a Dimension 8XXX then no there is no aftermarket cooler that fits, trust me on this one i used to have one and looked desperatly.

do you think some Arctic Ceramique would help? Maybe it's not making good contact

Yea reseat it and lap the stock cooler, it has deep machining marks on it and the stock goop has the thermal conductivity of poop.

It's a Dimension 4600 with the stock cooler and AS5...I don't know what is causing these probs. I just took a look at it (thanks mad mike) and it must have shut down again. There goes a whole evening and night of adding to the collective...shucks (old school word for the young)...Any advice would be appreciated.

109F is only 42.7C...not hot at all.

I would have to say it's the 250W Dell psu that caused the restart :D

yea i would say the same, have you lapped the stock cooler?

No I haven't done anything to the stock cooler. Do you think the Intel cooler would do any better? I have a spare Enermax Coolergiant PSU sitting around, but I understand Dell's PSU isn't standard wiring? I too think it may be the PSU or perhaps Ram?

It should be standard wiring. Older dell's used an odd wiring schmatic. Before you replace the PSU, place the two plugs side by side and make sure the colors match. I doubt they're any diffrent.

I had a dell mobo in a entire diff machine for a while here at home before I sold it.

I have an enermax 470W noisetaker on one of my main crunching machine and it is on the same generation as yours which is a dimension 8300. Only difference is that mine has 875P chipset compare to yours which is 865P. I've been using the enermax for almost 2 yrs now on that machine without any issues. :D

well that dualcore probably has better cooling and a better psu.

I also have a dual-core cpu, stock intel cooler, and a quiet system fan. I never had any problems with it. I do use a 520Watt Modstream though, might do the trick.
