I haven't been messing with PC's for awhile now but got a small problem. I ran out of HD space so I put in a small HD to store a few things, restarted and it said something like "Since something in your PC is changed, Windows requires you to re activate Windows XP" So I re enter my LEGIT code and it says something like "According to our Records, this keys use has been exceeded and windows will be disabled in 3 days." Obviously im not going to buy Winsucks again just to be able to continue using the install ive had for awhile now, so is there a way I can disable this stupid activation thing?

just call them up and get a code, they really are accomodating to all this changing of hardware and they are pretty fast from what I hear.

I need to buy Windows XP for my new rig as well, and I had the same question. Just to make sure, I wanted to know what things you have to do for Windows to make you activate it again? Since we here at XS are changing our rigs every few months, will it be a problem, and will I have to call them every single time I change a mobo, HDD, proc, etc.? My friend changed his G card, mobo and proc just last week, but kept his HDD, RAM, Optical drives, but when he formatted his computer, Windows let him activate as usual. Can someone please tell me what's going on here?

They do make you call to reactivate but MS policy is no questions asked to reactivate due to hardware changes. They will do it fast and quickly.

Well if you change a certainly quantity of things in a certain timeline, they consider it to be a substantially different computer. There are articles all over the net on this and on M$'s site as well.

i had to reactivate it to when i upgraded my mobo, i just called the number, it was pretty straight foward but they make you say the numbers on the screen instead of just pressing buttons on the phone so after every group of numbers you says its like "did you say 47829? if this is correct please say yes"

Lol. Ok, thanks a lot. It doesn't really matter for me then, since I change parts slowly. Going to buy it tomorrow then. Thanks a lot.

Hmmm never had that problem .... i've activated my windows on several computers now, and had to reinstall it on a few computers never had any problem.
I was starting to wonder if you relli had to activate windows or was it just a show to make people think u have to.

It only does it after the copy has been activated after a certain number of times (about 8 I think). You can get around the activations, as they can be removed - which is handy when you change your hardware very often.

Just get yourself corporate versions of Winds guys, they're corporate, no need for activation.

That would be illegal unless you can afford a corporate license.
