I was looking at my XEII's evaporator and the white foam surrounding it is extremely dense, and isn't like any foam I've seen. Is this a substance you can get ahold of easy? Will the pink foam you find at home depot be the similar in insulating ability?

Probably LDPE foam or Polyurethane foam...

wouldn't super dense foam be worse and just get really cold?

No idea Sneil. There are some that are extremely good while some are not. Been looking at material specification, etc for last couple of weeks and found few candidate so far but nothing definitive on pricing/machinability, etc.
BTW, so far, the best one I came up with seems to be PVC medium density foam. Very good thermal insulation property, hard and resistant to all kind of chemical, etc (do we even need that?) and hard which just about fits all category. Bad news would be machining cost.
