Hi :)
I decided I needed somthing that can handle a reasonably big heatload.
Compressor: Tecumseh E640-2 1PH, No idea what rating this thing is, only a few vague marking here & there, but she is pretty quiet & seems to pump well. This was removed from a mid-sized household A/C unit. If you have any idea about rating do tell :)
Condenser: With 28.8cm x 23.3cm 3 row conensor, with Quad fans installed on custom manifold (piece of mdf lol)...
Captube: 3.1m .031mm Cap
Drier: 20g
Fans: 2 x 120mm Sunon, 2 x 80mm Sunon. I origionally wanted 4 x 120mm Fans but they wouldnt fit so had to settle for the smaller 80mm.
PICS:
Compressor before spray paint.. had a little rust/dirt on ..

Breat out the wire brush to scrape the rust off..

And the condenser with 2 x 120mm fans & 2 x 80mm fans bolted on... the fans can cool the compressor at the same, as she does run quite hot after about an hour or two running.

Next up was to machine the block

System completely together ready for a test run

System charged & runnin in -19hg vacuume
http://phase-3.bigpondhosting.com/ocau/phase/hg.jpg
After a quick charge hit -45 pretty quickly.. no insulation..
http://phase-3.bigpondhosting.com/ocau/phase/temp.jpg
frozen evap
http://phase-3.bigpondhosting.com/ocau/phase/evap.jpg
After playing around with the charge a little..
http://phase-3.bigpondhosting.com/ocau/phase/_55.jpg
was quite happy with -55.. Havent insulated yet so might see a little lower!
Temps are unloaded, waiting for some decent hardware before I give her a run.
Think it has a small leak somewhere, lost a bit of charge over the last few days :(
Suspect it may be comming from the condensor.. i'll have to dunk it in the bath tomorrow :)
Thanks for reading

I belive it is r290 from looking at one picture. Nice work man :)

yes, R290 it is. I have a little R22 which i'll throw into the mix once I sort out this leaking problem.

IMO you better with 290 because r22 is for high temperature systems.

I thought R22 better @ absorbing heat than R290 & R290 better for lower temp?? so a mix of the 2 should go down quite well shouldnt it?

Yes but I doubt you will see any difference in adding it other than wasting it. You can't recover r22 if it's mixed with propane. Many made that mix and it's not a bad idea but I wouldn't waste that r22 for insignifiant to no performance incrase :P Anyway it's not like if our compressors were designed for such temps...Normal compressors should look into 4:1 or 5:1 ratio between high and low sides pressures.

I've actually heard quite good results with R22 & R290 combo.

R22 and R290 are allmost the same in performance. R22 is used for A/C's but that doesn't mean that it is a high temperature gas. R22 is cheap and safe, that's why it's used so much.
The compressor can cope with the low pressures, the system isn't for running continously for 5 years anyway.

Ask any refrigeration technician. r22 is a high/med temp gas not low. R22 would be better in med/high temps operations and propane is better in low ones. In low temps, the oil is less transportable and this is why propane is used in commercial cascades because propane carry the oil better than r22. I'm not telling you r22 isn't good for low temps I myself built many single stages with it but I noticed I would get lower temps with propane.

ta, that is just a drill press with a mill bit lol.. not designed for sideways cutting but it seemed to do it without to many problems...
the cross slide vice had some slack in her, which explains the jaggedy cuts in certian areas.

very nice cbuzz, good to see another aussie building here. Wonder if anyone know what vb tastes like
I remember russel_Hq saying before -46c r22 had more capacity than r290, but after -46c r290 had more capacity.
Baker18 and bowman use to kick ass with straight r22 with 1hp/1200btu rotaries with -50c load systems.
Im assuming that compressor came out of a r22 system?
I didn’t like straight r22 myself, (head pressure was high), but adding a small amount of r22 to r290 I found increased the high side pressure to cycle quicker.
I think that you will need to shorten the capillary line a little though
Good luck with tunning.

Nice Work CBuzz. Cant wait to see that thing on a system. I think you have just prompted me to start playing around with phase change again. Daylight savings is back so I can play after work in the daylight :D
oh, VB sucks :) Coopers Pale Ale all the way. (yes I am from Adelaide :P)
Pythagoras there is a few more bubbles (I hope in VB) compared to that oil.
Best beer is emu bitter (western Australian beer) heheeh
But second best have to agree with scrags on coopers pale ale.
That’s the stuff I home brew to help me phase change. :toast:
its big day today in australia melbourne cup day (horse races) i wonder what cbuzz has been up too :stick:
hope he was down the pub last few hours sinking a few :D

Nah, i'd go XXXX Gold myself (yes i am a queenslander :D ), but if i'm treating myself, James Boags Premuim  . On a side note, aussie guys, do you know where i could order a set of fridgy gauges from and what sorta cost i'd be looking at. I'm a 3rd year (soon to be 4th yr) mech engineering student and i'd like to start playing around with phase change systems, so i think i should probably invest in a set. Cheers Lads

$79 from BOC Manifold & hoses. Got it a bit cheaper as I bought a crapload of stuff off them :)

thx :)
The condensor from the unit above has now gone to a better place (cut it off & thrown down the driveway onto my rubbish pile).
Had a leak which I tried to fix 5 times & couldnt stop it leaking. Was leaking from one of the top u-tubes right on the crease of it going into the fins... :( no idea how a hole got there dammit.
Really liked that condenser to..

guess you mean the condenser??
i've got an angle grinder here & that probably would have worked, but it's to late.. the condenser didnt survive the long throw down the driveway.. its pretty mangled & bent now :(

He might have meant evaporator in cooler it was orignally in. There were time when people used evaporators in place of condenser if I am not wrong.

yes jinu117 is correct. The evaporator in the airconditioners cbuzz.
Normally the evap is smaller, and with a single mod (repipe) can be used as a cascade.
I using one in current cascade.
My very first co2 cascade condenser also had an evaporator as the condenser.
Also 3 or so singles as well come to thing of it.

Ok now for the fun part, after some initial block mounting issues the cpu was happily sitting on -25 / -30c in windows while the block was holding at around -45 / -50c while running Spi. I initally thought this cpu had cold bug kicking in, but im not 100% sure on that. I think I just got a crappy clocking 144 :/ This was the 3rd run of 8M Spi @ 2600Mhz

I actually managed to boot into Windows at 3030 @ 1.65v or somthing like that, but was unstable as hell. The CPU unloaded was happily sitting on -35c / -37c without crashing @ 2600/2700/2800Mhz, any higher it would crash.
Thanks
