this is my first DDR2 setup so take it easy on me.

Now if my PD840 could run at 250 FSB, what would be the choice of ram to pair it with on a 1:1 settings?

you should be looking at running the ram faster than 1.1.

figure 2.66 should be multi. (5 mem /4 cpu) so ddr 667would be the ticket. your cpu would be at 250mhz and the memory would be at 333 mhz (or ddr 667 if you wanna go that route) this gives ou better bandwith than 250mhz cpu and 250mhz mem (1/1)

what cpu are you using?

Pentium D 840 Smithfield 800MHz FSB

I don't know if I got this right. 333MHz is the actual speed and the designated spec is DDR667?

Your Pentium D 840 will certainly be able to run at 250FSB (and higher), since the chip supports EIST (speedstep). The multiplier can be adjusted between 14x and 17x.

Get the Asus P5WD2 board and some Corsair 5400UL or 8000UL sticks.
14 x 285FSB with 3:4 memory divider should be easy with good air cooling.

yes its 333x2 not 166x2 like you may be thinking

Would a pair of 6400 work too?

I've got Mushkin 6400s and they work well with the 8xxd's
