View Full Version : Compressor broken?

I bought an Aspera compressor of ebay, its new but when moved from side to side you can hear a loud noise, it sounds and feel like something heavy inside is hitting the sides of the compressor like a loud metal to metal sound. I dont know enough about compressors or have ever owned a new one to know if its broken or for some reason new compressors do this. For some reason I dont think its normal for compressors to have loose insides!
Just wanted to check before I contact the seller
Thanks
Johann

Mine does it also, and it works fine. But, its a Embarco. The sound is like a metal ball hitting the side of the compressor, right? Thats what mine sounds like.

compressors are hung in the shell on springs, when shaken it will bang the sides, but should not under normal operation.

I think thats normal, mine makes some metal to metal noises aswell when you move it around. Its probably just the normal compressing bits shifting due to motion.
The best thing to do would be to test it out before contacting the seller, theres no other way you'll know if it works.

Just typed about 15 minutes on a reply and when I hit the submit button the site freezes and I have to close and retype everything. Its been doing it alot during the past few days, anyone else having problems?
Anyways back to the subject
It does indeed sound like a metal ball hitting the sides! Only reason why I though it is abnormal is because i moved my danfoss around and it makes no noises.
If you guys say its pretty much normal then I suppose it should be OK. I cant test it atm because I have no electronics for it, it only has the naked 3 pins on the side for power. Also I havent decided what to do with it yet, its for R600 so maybe it may be completely useless, but maybe I can put some R22 in it as its got mineral oil inside or change it to POE and put R404A in. Ill see later when I find a use for it
What do I need electronics wise to get this compressor running? 220-240v 50hz
RussC, how does yours run, I believe Aspera and Embraco is the same company. Is it quiet?

Like wdrzal has stated, the internals are hung on springs and the internals will clout the walls if shook.

I have an idea... :) Don't move it from side to side.
"Doc, It hurts when I do this."
The doctor says, "So don't do that.."

You dont need to move it from side to side to hear the noise, just picking it up and moving it around is enough to do it

Yeah, picking it up and moving it around equates to moving it from side to side. Any jostle one way or the other, be it up, down, side to side, diagonal, etc, will make a spring mounted motor move.

LoL... isn't there a hermatic compressor that doesn't make this sound? :P Don't worry about it johann.
Will there be damage if it is being knock constantly. Cause i bought a new one and had to bring it all the way home, walking train, buses. And makes noise when i walk. Does it damage it?

I can agree with simply everyone, who posted here already! ....
IT'S simply NORMAL! :D ;)

I don't know that they ALL do. Some use better hardware than others... :p

Very quiet, I'm quite pleased with it. You wouldn't know its on if the fan wasn't running.
Yes, Aspera and Embarco are the same company.
for the electronics, go to Embarcos website, I believe the electronics that are needed are there in the documention.

I didn't know that. Explains why it makes this kinda noise though.. :p:
My Tecumseh does not. And a Danfoss probably won't either. Don't even have to mention Copeland. :p:

Hmmm all my Danfoss makes these noise? Stewie, I think you probably are thinking running noise? Running noise depends more heavily on compressor series than brand name generally though. Got danfosses here some are VERY quiet, some are bit loud, and some are bit louder. (NF, SC, etc) Also have embraco in hand that is VERY quiet. I wish this type of geralization of certain brand being quiet or loud worked than I wouldn't have this many compressors here trying to figure out which one is the quietest with good load characteristics I am looking for...

I'm not thinking running noise. I haven't even RUN my tecumseh yet. He said he was moving it around and it would make knocking noises. Says to me that Embraco uses cheaper internal hardware. They're not exactly the "best" out there.
every compressor makes that noize (hermetic)
its not normal if it doesn't make that noize:)

Is the Aspera the quietest one you have come across? If so, what series is it? (NEK?)
And in regards to the Danfoss compressors.... I know that the TL, NL, FR and SC series all do it... ;)

No idea yet on NEK wait up. Quietest one is FGS chilly uses other than Danfoss NF9FX. (Think FGS is bit quieter). NEK is supposed to be even quieter but my unit hasn't arrived yet. Also have NTY Danfoss on the way to me which is highly energy efficient unit too. Energy efficient ones tend to be quieter from what I can see though :)
And Stewie... I would worry about your compressor if it doesn't make that noise...

Ah cool! :)
That NTY series does look very interesting, I agree. One more question that has been spinning around my head for a very long time...
What compressor do you prefer... One that is rated for R404/507, or one that is rated for R134a? Whats the real difference (if any) between those models? And, why is either one better suited for direct die units?

Think Chilly1 prefers R134 or R22 units. I myself prefer R404 unit just because I am running it closer to spec. But bottom line, compressor is compressor... :) They do exactly same thing. Only differences are way the valves are designed, chamber size, materials used maybe, and variations. It's like car engine I guess. All differently tuned, but in essence, it is cylinderical engine (forget mazda for a second with their rotary engine :P), just variation of it.

What because someone with a hobby thinks he knows something? :p:
I pick up hermetic scrolls all the time at work. They're not as small as mine, but they don't make any noise. I move em around alot. I am not worried.
When my compressor powers up and runs flawlessly, it'll be further proof that it is not normal for all compressors.

LoL... should have mentioned scroll compressor. I am pretty sure our friend here doesn't have scroll compressor in hand. What were you trying to say again about his compressor?
PS) Would appreciate if you can think in scale of what we are trying to do most of time. We are not trying to cool whole building with packaged air, we are not cooling some rocket exhaust, we are trying to cool computer and your generalized comment to quiet often comes to me as I am holier than thou with not much helping to threads.

No, I'm sarcastic...er than thou... :p:
Anyways, it would help to know WHAT kind of compressor he has..
