"The fourth generation of graphics double data rate (GDDR) memory is able to process gaming and video images at a rate of 10 GByte per second, which is roughly 725 percent more than what current GDDR3 technology provides. Overall, Samsung said that GDDR4 could deliver a speed increase of 56 percent when compared to GDDR3..."

See the screenshot of GDDR4? That's 136pin BGA. What does this mean?
Remember that R520 currently uses 136pin GDDR3, and publicly supports GDDR4 and onwards ;)

Nvidia need a new GPU to support GDDR4 ?

Potentially yes, depending on how their memory controller is built. AFAIK it's essentially the same as the NV40 memory controller, so the answer is probably yes.
Also remember that ATI has been stressing from Day 1 that their memory controller would be able to handle future memory types, especially GDDR4.
Remember the rumors how R580 has a socket design? I bet you'll be able to upgrade your R580 to GDDR4 when Samsung gets the production up in 2006 ;)

We know R520 supports it, and we dont know if G70 can support it, lets leave it at that.
Rest of discussion can be the performance difference gddr4 will bring and its implications for gaming and non-gaming applications...whatever you want, just dont give in to the urge to talk about whos gonna get it first lol

Can someone explain to me how 725% more bandwidth translates to 56% more performance? I don't follow.

far higher latencies, so even optimised for bandwidth, working around the latency would mean that gddr4 needs the extra speed to make up for the additional latency hit.

Q2 current GPU's is history anyway =)

It says 10 GB/sec. of GDDR4 is about 725% of GDDR3 bandwith, and Samsung says you gain about 56% performance.
but It does'nt* look right that 10 GB/sec. only gives you 50-60% performance. :stick:
I would say GDDR4 is at least 200% faster than DDR3 if it really runs at 10 GB/sec.
EDIT: 'nt*

I just mailed my green friends and the answer is that G70´s memory controller doesn´t support GDDR4 and that´s just the bottom line.
Greets :)

Thats Ok, just alittle tweaking should get er done
Just a memory controller, just gotta redesign it, not too hard ;)

They already said that they're working on a gpu socket, but ram chips will not be interchangable for obvious reasons, like needing to be permanently soldered to the pcb. The ram chips won't be interchangable.
This doesn't mean there isn't a chance we won't see GDDR4 on a R580 at somepoint, it just means not to expect to be able to change the ram chips on the PCB.

ATI said that we will see Q2 what their memory controller can do with GDDR4 so i guess R580 will be shipped with this ram.

But if the r520 is compatible with GDDR4, Im sure they will make their mid-range cards a r520 + GDDR4, while the flagship is a r580 + GDDR4

GDDR4 will be very expensive, no?

Upgrade the PCB? That's what I meant in my original post :stick:

clarification, meet Shadowmage. Shadowmage, meet clarification. You guys are gonna be friends from now on. :buddies:
Just messin with you. Honestly though, you did make it out like you were assuming you'd be able to change the memory chips as well.

that would be a great momentus ocassion.....and would be a good thing to film how a video card burns up and dies via memory upgrade
but if it worked you would be recieving a :oscar:
while you :pimp: the hoes and they will all :bows: and :worship: you.
My guess is by the time this stuff comes out, I will be living in a cardboard box for having spent too much money on computer parts already!
