Ladies and Gents,

I would like to start an A/C water chilled unit. However after reading some of the threads, there is no definative thread for the newbie. I've read "It's not for newbies," but lets face it, everyone was a newbie at one point or another.

I don't have a backround as a refrigeration tech, I have a backround in being shot at by people in foreign countries, so I'm not afraid of a refrigerant burn.

I don't want to jump right into making a cooling system, I want to learn. I don't even know what I need to learn though.

I'm calling for this to be the newbie question thread like,

"Explain brazing?"
"What's an evaporator and condensor? How can I tell the difference when I take an A/C apart?"
"What the bloody hell is a capillary tube and why are people crimping them and adding tiny ones?"
"What's the best coolant to use?"
"Any particular tubing to stay away from?"
"What tools should I have on hand?"

Pictures are great, but a diagram with labels would help. I'm needy, but hell, who isn't?

Ya,
theres tons of info here and in the other vapor phase change catagory on this site. Just do searches and you will come up with more info than you'll want right now. Especially in the vapor Phase Change catagory. Most all the info that you asked has been hashed out a number of times.

I started a brazing thread there with pics:
