What has to be done to get digital out of a S.B. Platinum. Is it just a special cable from cdrom to card?

you need a sp/dif cable and a 2pin cable to hook from cd-rom to card

right. Get any 2pin wire such as an old hdd led. Then find any old connector, if it's 4 pin get a knife and cut it down to size. Nothing special about the cable, it's just 2 wires.

Digitally hooking up your cd is pointless if not hooking your speakers up digitally as then you have an analog converter in the path which is always bad for perfect reproduction. A further pointer, you'll be amazed at the difference between using PC Speakers (no matter whether they're expensive cambridge ones or not) and PROPER separates-HiFI style speakers. Anything with less than an 8" cone in it just can't give off the full frequency range. You can get HiFI amps with s/pdif for £40 nowadays...

However, no matter what you do, a speaker is still analog, so every speaker will have it's own characteristics. Look for JBL Gold Reference Monitors, around £49 a pair, 50w (PROPER watts not that bullsh*t rating PC Speaker manufacturers use)

They're ace for digital repro on a budget

Sorry, got on a rant there!! oops...
