View Full Version : Can I OC better my A64 (754)/DFI NF3 with 2 512MB sticks by using water or good air?

Hi!
When I had 1 single stick of ram I was able to do about 2744MHZ stable. With 2 sticks of RAM (512 each) I can only do 2694MHZ stable anything else and 3dmark 2001 crashes to desktop but still I can Super Pi 32MB at 2703. Do you think adding better cooling like a Big Typhoon or some water cooling (Aquagate Mini 120 being my only option) will help my OC or is my OC limited by my 754 single channel memory controller. I know the 754 CPUs are famous for having poorer OC when using 2 sticks of 512MB so I dont know if getting better cooling will help me or not. Anyone?
BTW, is the Aquagate mini comparable to the Typhoon? I ask cause I need to move my PC and while someone told me that moving the PC with the typhoon wasnt a problem as long as I move it with the PC horizontally, I just realize that when I move it to a lan party I cant do it horizontally cause my Toyota MR2 is very limited in space so vertical is the only way for me to carry it.
Regards

ps sorry for posting in wrong place.

ack yourself this: will you notice the difference in 50mhz? if not, i say don't bother. if you really want that 50mhz back, bump up voltage or get a heatsink that will drop temps like.. 10c :toast:

But keep in mind that I achieved 2744 using the stock HS and not going over 1.55v so I am pretty sure the CPU has room to go dont you think? Heck one day that I forgot to turn off the apartment AC and the temp drop more than usual (65C I think) I was able to get it stable at 2770. My question is if the memory controller will be helped at all by running the cpu cooler or not.

Good aircooling is not very expensive. Try a Big Typhoon or Hiper6+ or similar and report back.

For $50 I would get the BT, for any more oc and to keep the cpu cooler. I move my computer all the time with a BT on and have had no problems.

that chip is killer! im only @ 2.7ghz with 1.72v on my 3400

if it your cpu scales well, 2.8-2.9ghz with air shouldnt be a problem

edit - you cant bench at over 2.7ghz with 2 sticks? Strange, you need to up volts man. My chip is good for 2.85Ghz benches in the summer, hopefully 2.9Ghz in the winter and thats on air with 2 sticks

is your single memory (754) Korpse? I am pretty sure I am needing extra voltage cause 3dmark crashes to desktop at 2700 which is a sign of lack of volts. Thats why I need better cooling. 2.8-2.9 on air will be too amazing man...i hope you are right! I will be happy with 2.8 for sure. gonna get the Typhoon then it seems the Aquagate is not very popular around here. BTW, just got an X-Fi Fatal1ty and it rocks...ten times better than my Audigy 2. And the good thing it was only $199.99 due to a Fry's price error. It took me a lot of effort to convince them that it was their fault but I did!
