Hello,

First time poster [rabid lurker] here at XS. I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on a kit of the 2 gig Ballistix that seem so nice:

It seems to be coming down to either that or the OCZ EB stuff. Price is comparable, so I'm overthinking this as usual :p:

My question deals with heat. Do either of these sticks require active fan cooling? I have TCCD in my other rig, and that stays pretty much cool as a cucumber.

How hot do these sticks get? If so...what is the best way to go about rigging up cooling? Are there any clip on fansets worth noting, or should I cut a hole in my case and try to rig up a fan?

I plan on doing a healthy OC (the 3700+ SD I am about to order I would like to get to 2.7...best case 2.8)

If anyone has any experience with this, it would be a help!

Thanks in advance :toast:

I'm not sure if people use them on the Ballistix or not, but I don't believe they are notoriously hot.

check that thread for some ram cooling ideas.

My Ballistix get really hot when running Memtest or the like. Other than benches they're not to bad. I did set up a 120mm fan blowing across the sticks though just for good measure.

my ballistix are very hot running at 250 @3-3-3-8 with only 2.6v without any cooling, too hot to touch! But....after I put an 80mm fan on top of them the heatspreader are slightly warm to almost cold at 300 @3-3-3-8 @3.0V underload (memtest, prime, 3dmark in loop, superpi 32m, etc), I haven't heard any 2GB ballistix died from overclocking or heat yet but on the safe side I strongly recommend you to cool them with whatever fan you have laying around, they have lifetime warranty to boot so I'd say there's nothing to worry about.

I guess you can use the fan on the stock amd heatsink. It should be sufficient even if you run it slowly :)
