View Full Version : Which Dothan 400MHz would be the best choice for pin mod in XPS 2?

I'm looking to replace my Pentium M 770 in my XPS 2 with something like a Pentium M 745 1.8GHz and pin mod it to 533FSB to get 2.4Ghz at stock voltage. I've seen a few people do this already and i'm just wondering if the 745 would be the best choice or if its possible to get like a 755 thats capable of running 533FSB at stock voltage. What would you suggest as a replacement in my XPS 2?

the 1.6ghz mods to 2.133 nearly all of the time. The 1.7 gets to 2.66 most of the time. Some 1.8s will do 2.4, but thats really pushing your luck. I'd personally go with a 1.7ghz chip.

The 1.7 gets to 2.66 most of the time? How does it do that? Why would the 1.7 get higher then the 1.8?

17*133=2266. 18*133=2400.

You forgot the other 2 earlier :p.
I think i'm going to try for the 745 and 2.4GHz because 2.26 is hardly worth it over my current 2.13.

good luck with it. you're gonna need it for 2.4ghz. be sure to replace the thermal paste. you might also have to give it a little more juice. vcore and multiplier are easily changeable in windows, so once you do the mod, you won't need to open it up unless you want to use pin-voltmods if they are needed (i recommend setting the voltage with pins, saves you a big headache of upping the voltage every time).

Seriously, what do you expect from a 267 MHz faster chip? Or do you want the 770 in a desktop?

Well i was only considering it because i could sell my 770 and make a profit and you also have to realize that 267MHz is a nice little boost for a Pentium M because their faster clock for clock then even Athlon64's.
Since it's a bit hard to find a good 745 I suggest you ask people here at XS for a 745 that can do better than 2400 prime stable at stock Vcore. That person will most likely exchange his CPU with yours even if it will cost some money.

thats a good idea mats. I'm sure many would be open to the idea :)
you have over100 posts, the for sale section is at the bottom of the XS forums main page.

267MHz is ALOT on a 9 stage pipeline.
btw, most 1.8s will do 2.4 with a bit of extra voltage (just another pin to connect). 2.66 might be possible with a bit of luck and extra vcore on the 2ghz

don't get it wrong bro turion pwns dothan in notebook, but once you put dothan on desktop, then it's faster ... but only when in desktop read some reviews

The PM wins in some tasks, the PM in others.
Not sure about practical tests, but the PM theoretically has a lower power consumption (based on Intel tech docs = 27W and Turion I believe is 35W), thus less need for coolng also resulting in lighter laptops and longer battery lives.

Really? Ok, that would make it an easy choice!
PM is 27 W
T64 ML is 35 W
T64 MT is 25 W
Their testing metholoies are different though, AMD's tests gives higher numbers and Intels are lower. They are not comparable. PM wins many times because of two reasons. Most T64 laptops use the ML and Inrel's PM chipsets draws less power.
Here's a nice comparisation, again with the 35 W T64 (http://www.laptoplogic.com/resources/articles/42/1/1/). I'd like to see what the 25 W MT can do.

I would go with the 735. Mine BARELY runs stable at 2.26GHz. In fact I run it at 2.13GHz because if I lower voltage one notch from default 1.340v at 2.26, it's unstable. If you do decide on the 745, you can always downclock it to 2.26 or 2.13 with RMclock after boot; that is of course if it's stable enough at 2.4GHz to boot. Otherwise you're screwed.

If i do this i'll probably go with the 735 just to be on the safe side and it will be a little cheaper as well. Are there any differences between the 400Mhz and 533Mhz Dothan CPU's other then FSB speed of course? I noticed the 400Mhz versions dont support that feature which prevents buffer overflows or whatever.

Dont know what reviews you've been looking at but the Turion and Dothan are pretty much comparible in performance although the Dothan is ahead more of the time. Turion's also ship with :banana::banana::banana: GPU combinations. Only real reason why the Turion has a little advantage in certain areas is because of it using the DDR400 with tighter timings then the DDR2 533. For gaming the Pentium M is usually the best choice as it rivals most high-end desktop CPU's such as the A64 4000+ and FX-55.

I would save your money, maybe get a 1.6 ghz chip and take it back to 2.13 ghz, sell the 770 and get the 7800 mobile there is a guide for getting it into your xps on notebookforums i think, and the vid card will make a bigger difference then the increase in processor speed. (oh you should also be able to get dell to buy back the 6800 or sell the 6800 to some1 with a x300, this will make the cost to the faster vid card minimal)

I'm just going to hang on to my Go 6800 Ultra for now. Its plenty fast for the games i play. I just wanted to go with the Pentium M pin mod to make a little money and get a little more performance.
