I have come to the conclusion the 9600se sucks. This may offend some of you but it is just my opinion of my testing with the FEAR demo. Here is my minimum performance figures I got with 9600se:
640x480..........47fps
800x600..........32fps
1024x768..........21fps
1280x960..........14fps
1600x1200..........8fps
with 9600xt(in exact same spawn/save area)
640x480..........105fps
800x600..........70fps
1024x768..........45fps
1280x960..........29fps
1600x1200..........18fps
game details was set per my screenshots:

I was expecting about double the performance with 9600xt vs. 9600se and I indeed got that and more! I am glad to know my Venice running at only 250x9=2.25GHz has enough punch to take (full) advantage of a 9600xt.
The 9600se(at stock) is a rather slow card. It is good enough to enjoy modern games with some compromises at 800x600 or 1024x768. However 9600xt's arent terrabily expensive at this point and they are more than double the performance! FEAR runs like a dream at 1024x768 almost everything to maximum *with* 16x af and 4x aa! I get 24fps instead of 45. This is still faster than the 9600se without aa/af and medium details! having 3 times the ram bandwith the 9600xt provides really works wonders!
I am gonna pop in my 9700 now and oc it too and see how FEAR runs at the same settings as my 9600xt but 1600x1200 :D

Ok so I have shadows disabled. It takes a stupidly big hit of 75%! Instead of 24fps it drops to 6! Plus it makes the game too dark too. I dont need extra shadows. I got textures to medium, it gives me a "not enough memory" if I set them to maximum. I am not about to go out and buy a 256mb video card for that. I am not really missing anything. You can no longer give me your famous excuse "you dont have aa/af on" well I do and cant believe its only taking a 30% hit for 4x aa! Thats less hit than the next higher res too! 4x aa helps somewhat by blurring the jaggies and id say its equal or slightly better looking than *one* res higher. *two* res higher is still better. I will no longer bash aa as long as it takes equal or lesser hit than the next higher res without aa. I am going to underclock my cpu next and see how FEAR runs!

screenshot of the beginning of the game. The IQ is fantanstic, I have all the eyecandy on(except soft shadows) with 16 af 4x aa. 38fps is not bad at all for my cpu being only 2.25GHz backed by a stock 9600xt
on another note, I ran the cpu stock 1.8GHz then oced to 2.25GHz and gained 18.3% more fps for a 25% cpu and fsb overclock. Shows that games are very cpu intensive and scales well with additional cpu speed. The test was done at 640x480 medium details because of my 9600xt. With faster gpus, you become cpu limited even at 1600x1200! Slower gpus become gpu limited at 1600x1200 but cpu limited at low(er) resolutions.

Yea, the 9600se sucks. Badly.

im in agreement. However the 9600xt is still a very capable card and more than twice as good as the 9600se. ive been enjoying fear at 1024x768 with 16x af, 4x aa and all the eyecandy :)

I'm very confused by this thread. You are going to put in your 9700 and play 1600*1200? Explaining what AA is to us? Seriously, been drinking? ;)
I won't go into it too much. I remember a very similar situation with your Ti4200 and supposed performance in FarCry. A detail or two might be off here but essentially: People begged you for proof. A fraps shot was taken with an fps at least a little bit lower than you stated, and it was pretty much a given you waited for that split second a high number was up. So, I won't have ya anxiously waiting for that split second to hit print screen while you look at the sky in FEAR.
... and think about that last paragraph for a second, loads of Bull aren't forgotten.

A 6600GT with no soft shadows 4xAA/8xAF, rest on high, exactly what you claim to be running, gets a smashing "stab your eyes with a fork" 20fps with an FX57 behind it. An x800GT a "leap out the window" 19fps.

I guess "all the eye candy" could mean something different when you are running a 9600se, but in this case it would have to be leaps and bounds below what most people mean - normally it means the settings on high.

well I have only softshadows disabled but everything on and im getting great performance :) anyway I have purchased a 9700pro for $64 shipped(wow cheap) and it should give me at least 50% more performance. This is plenty card for me

I feel crippled (in general, not just FEAR) with a 9800P @ 420/385 backed by a venice at 2650. Got any secrets tweaks to share?

Geforce you're still doing ring around the rosey with budget cards? I dunno, people get the best they can afford, I understand that, but it seems you could get something nicer. I could see for the love of benching, but have you ever thought of getting like a TEC off of ebay for like practically nothing? Vmods? You know, since the card like a 9600se is super cheap? That could be some fun. Essentially what you are doing is trying your luck with a budget card over and over and over. Man that thing would be a frankenstein if I was toying with it. Would be more fun than playing a modern video game with that thing. ;)
I'm amazed you are still in this game. You had 9500->9700 and then later got a 9600se now back to the R300's again.... oh well, not my money. Solder some wires onto some 56k modem for practice and give that 9600se the a$$ kicking it deserves. :p

actually, it is more than you need (the 9700), staring at walls :wierd: doesn't require a high powered card :owned: , it will look about the same as the one you are gettin' rid of.

You know whats funny about this is I think if you sold your 9700pro and your 4200 and your 9600's you could buy a 6800LE which equals a whole lot more performance than all of those cards and amazingly enough is only one generation old.

I have never quite followed Geforces neverending quest for 7800GTX performance at bargain basement pricing scheme.
As I recall, didnt you have a 9800 pro for a while and came to the conclusion that is also "sucked".
I just cant imagine trying to play FEAR and swapping in all my old PCI cards to see which ones would run the game....

Geforce lives in West Palm Beach i believe, if so, the area has been without power for days, the destruction of the power lines was extensive. thus the reason for his extended absense i believe.
he could pick up a 6600 of decent flavor on the cheap, only be one generation or so behind, and have a card that will serve him much better. i am sure that if he sells his older stuff on Ebay, he could easily garner enough cash to make this as painless as possible.
but then he wouldn't be what he is if he did :lastweek: (pun intended) hehe.

Ok.. WTH? I have problems ( comes to ~20fps in some points ) to play with an x800xt , and you can play sweet with a 9600xt with aa and AF? :stick: I can't understand... :D May all of us swap the 7800 for a 9600xt? I hope you don't get in offense, it's not my intention, but i can't understand that, in the demo i got "problems" with a dothan @2,7ghz & x800xt OC'ed @1280x1024 and you can play with a 9600xt and a 2,25ghz a64... I hope you'd understand me... :toast:
PS: i used 2gigs of ram also...
BTW: if your framerates means max FPS then i barely could understand...

9600se are fastest 64bit card.
9600xt are higher frequencies, and 128bit.
Maybe compare x800gt and x800xt PE? Sounds the same, but performace are very dissimilar.
The same 9800se(128bit/128MB) and 9800xt.

there is NO point buying a 64 bit card today. Even 128 bits is getting kinda pointless. Once 512 bit cards come out, hopefully late 2006 with r600 and g80, everyone will bash 128 bits. The 6600gt is the fastest 128 bit card I know. The x1600 is supposed to also be 128 bits but I havent seen any out, just x1800 and x1300.
The 9600xt was OK but I now have a real 9700pro thats at least 50% faster and it absolutely flies in FEAR 1024x768 with 4x aa, 16x af and everything maxed out except shadows off. I get 45fps average. Save your arguments reguarding shadows, I am not buying a $300 card just to run poorly coded shadows.

I pwn a 9600XT AIW and it delivers great frames. I can get over 230 fps on CS:Source stress test 800/600 ! Plays Fear and Quake 4 just fine at 1280 /1024 with some things turned down.
Not dissappointed.
