I shouldn't be in here lol.. but I'm building a PC for here at work. My Celeron 333 finally died and my IT Director wants a high end workstation. He only buys Intel and I don't keep up with intel stuff, so enlighten me.
Would it be better to go with a 650 (3.4ghz, 2mb L2) vs a 830 (Dual Core 3ghz 2x1mb L2)? I do mainly "office" work at this location (excel, PS, Infopath, lots of remote desktop connections, telnet and SMTP logging ect), and of course it'll do some D2OL.
Price really isn't an issue, but $320 is about as high as I'd want to go for a CPU.(This does have to be an entire system with monitor and mouse/keyboard.)
Thanks guys, and any other info would be great.

first whats it used for. If you are doing a lot of multitasking, then I'd opt for the dual core

I guess you could say multi-tasking.

In that instance only the D2OL will really benefit from the dual core, so selfishly for the team I say buy the dualie. For your business apps, it's not going to make a lick of difference as they are not CPU intensive. It's more a case of multi applications as opposed to multi tasking

I too say the 830. As with that you can do what ever on the computer and still run D2OL and not impact anything else.

830. A buddy of mine has one, and it runs really nicely. OCs to 3.6 on stock voltage. If thats important. Anyway, Its not THAT hot.. He Had the stock cooler with A Vantec Tornado on it, and it ran in the lower 40s. A Zalman 7700CU would be a great match i think. Quiet, and great cooling performance.

Thanks again guys!
It most likely will be the 650 thou, my IT Director is a little more strict that I thought. ;)
I couldn't have a 80gb SATA hard drive, i had to have a 73gb Raptor. (which is like $120 price diffrence lol)
Kinda OT, but I figured it was better here than to start a new thread. What is the best LGA 775 board?
I picked out a MSI i945 Neo-F, but once agian my IT Director questions the MSI. So now i'm looking at the Asus P5WD2. (asus seems to be his company of choice)
Gah, I never knew this would be so hard, if it was just my choice I woulda thrown together a DX rig and been done with it ;)
TIA.

Ditto! I can't believe that your director won't be tempted by it...
