The title says it all. I have about 10 p2 450s that I cand run at @ 100% cpu 24/7. Would that do much?

Not craploads, but an ok amount. (equal to a 2.5-3ghz P4?) Probably has poor computerpower:powerusage though... depends whos paying the power bill :p

not sure I understand your post TMM. I have about 10 Pentium 2 450mhz 128mb ram computers that are just sitting here. My desktop is running F@H now (AMD Athlon 64 1gb ram) but I wanted to know if these older computers would work or do much?

They certainly will fold! they will be assigned work candidates suitable for their processing power/ram capabilities. No they won't be as fast as an A64, but they will certainly produce steady results. The key with slower systems is just to run a basic install with no advanced flags in order to keep them from getting huge work packets. I run a basic client on a 1GHz PIII and it does OK, turns in points for me anyhow :)

I would advise trying it on a couple and seeing if you are happy with the results!

What do you mean by "Basic install"? Sorry I am new to this.

I just started my desktop today
I will try to have the other computers up next week. I need some more network cables.

So I should use the non-gui one and use small packets?

Ugly n Grey
10-20-2005, 10:14 AM
you can use either, for simplicity sake I always rec just trying it with the GUI version, it's just too easy to pass up :) you can monitor either remotely by putting a file share on the folding application folder and using for example, FAHMON

okay I will try it

Thanks welcome to the XS folding team! What brought you into the folding forum?

The last I heard stanford suggests nothing slower than a 200Mhz system, with I think it was 32 or 64 megs of ram. Anything over that will fold, but might not complete a few work units in time. Overall it should be ok though and would deffinately get you some points on the boards.
Welcome to the Xtreme and thanks for the help!

I remember I was a big fun of SETI @ home project but I lost interest in any of other similar type (folding, D2OL) projects. They just consume power and give me nothing. Well, maybe you can convince me to start folding :D

Well Kiwi, Stanford is definitely doing protein folding research and working towards reserach for cures for diseases. There is a full write up on the Stanford site.

We here at XS are not asking people to put up a thousand boxes to fold, just adding it for use to you normal rig would make us very grateful.

Being part of the team is a plus and if you have a competative streak, then let's RACE :)

Cheers

I was looking around the forums and saw it when I came to this section. I just joined earlyer this year for the Phase Change part of things and have been exploring the other thing that are done here.
Okay so the computers will work but will they make enough of a impack to run them all the time? Power is not a big issue.

I am not entirely certain what they will produce to be honest, but with ten of them cranking all the time they are bound to have an impact, absolutely. Thanks for filling us in :)

Okay I will try it and see what they will do. I hope to have some time to get at lest 4 of them running next week.

well XS is full of very fun and smart individuals.

but the folding team is where all the _cool_ kids hang out. you want to be _cool_ don't you? :)

Yes, they will work, they will be a bit on the slow side, but they will fold work units.

Okay my desk top is running it now and I have a p3 running it aswell. I should have some others running next week.

WTG Bugs :toast: we look forward to you climbing the stats ladder :)

BugsBMD
10-21-2005, 08:10 PM
well I'm not sure how much I can do, it seems to be going slow even on my Althon 64. How fast should it be working? I still have not completed one work unit. The one on my 64 is 5000 frames and it has about 3000 done. Not sure what it is doing on the p3 because it is a multi-user computer so I have it running as a servese on the non GUI.

P.S. My Althon 64 runs day time only (it is in my room) but the p3 runs 24/7.

well you can get some estimations by using this tool if you would like http://fahmon.silent-blade.org/
It's called FAHMON and lets you track across your network, it support Linux as well and can help you keep an eye on this.

None of the WU's finish lightenting fast so don't be alarmed. And don't worry about the quantity of contribution, that you contribute is enough :toast:

BugsBMD
10-21-2005, 08:32 PM
Okay well I will see what happends. I will try the tool tomarrow.

BugsBMD
10-24-2005, 07:46 AM
well the tool runs but I don't have it on all the computers yet. I have added another computer (barton 2600 512mb ram) and will add a p2 later today. I like the non-gui setup works great.

Ugly n Grey
10-24-2005, 07:52 AM
Perfect. I can see you starting to appear on the stats chart, but your score per WU is realtively low. Do you see any errors in the log files?

BugsBMD
10-24-2005, 07:56 AM
well my athlon 64 has done one WU and that was about 145 points and my p3 has done one to but it was small and only about 40 points. I am looking the the log now.

BugsBMD
10-24-2005, 08:01 AM
I did not see any thing wrong it you want to look here it is. I did have a problem with the core????

Ugly n Grey
10-24-2005, 08:05 AM
OK it looks fine, I take it the stats haven't made it up yet is all. Great work!! :) I think you'll start getting larger packets to the higher scoring machines shortly!!

Okay sounds good. I hope to add some more computers soon. I am not doing any thing accept sharing my computing power. I just don't understand why so few people are doing it. It does not efect my computer at all when I am using it.

Edit I need to get some thing to put in my sig to promote this.

Well, if your computer is running at high CPU utilization all the time, you're slowing it down and using more electricity than if it were sitting idle (especially with CnQ etc). But for the most part, people turn on a computer and let it sit idle then just use it for non-CPU intensive taks so this is a good use for their computers.

BugsBMD
10-24-2005, 08:25 AM
Yes it uses a little more power, but when you want to use the computer for gaming or som intence computing like that F@H stops using the cpu power and the game gets priority. (I think this the way it work) am I right???

F@H isn't perfect, but it definitely tries to only use the spare CPU all the time!

Sure, here is your specific URL for your stats siggy just take off the quotes and use the URL to the picture

cool someone to compete with..

ill race you to top 15...?

BugsBMD
10-24-2005, 10:28 AM
At this point I am not racing(I don't have the time). I am just trying to devote the extra computers that I have around to help the cause. But if you want we can see who will make it there first but I am very low on the list now.

BugsBMD
10-25-2005, 05:57 AM
Revv23 we can race if you want but I think that you will win.
Question
My p3 has a larg work load now and the estamated end time is dec 21 but the dead line is dec 22 is this a problem? Will it have enough time to finish?

BugsBMD
10-25-2005, 06:12 AM
I found Some thing on the computer that was slowing it down. It says that it should end in a few days now.

we'll see, your multiple slower computers against my few fast ones...

itll be friendly... no race, we can just keep track.

Okay thats good to hear. I will have some time friday to get the rest of my computers up and running as long as I can get some net work cables.
