View Full Version : Lapping the TT Big Typhoon, how much of an improvement?
hi guys
Bought an Big Typhoon last month and im really happy with its perform :) load temp is around 40C with my Opty at 2.85ghz
heres the question, when I first got it, I did a quick lapping (400 grits paper) and put it straight on till now.
so I wanna know if it worths to take it out and lap all the way to 2000 grits? does it really lower the temp, and if yes, by how much?
cheers guys

If the core is naked it will make no noticeable difference. If the core has the IHS intact, you can expect a reasonable 1-2C change max.
..dont forget to lap IHS's stupid corners to flat, nothing idea for lapping cooler if cooler dont sit on CPU :stick:

it seems not really worth the hassle :) I will lap it next time I change the CPU :D

I say the same thing.. haven't lapped my Typhoon either. was thinking about doing it, but since i have to remove the motherboard to get the cooler off, i think it's not worth it.. will do that when i buy a Dualcore CPU :)

Does lapping the IHS void warranty? IRRC it does.

yes
somebody was advertising a custom made IHS that you could lap (then replace with the original if needing to RMA or summat) - was it OPB with the link?

Why would you put a new IHS if you can just go naked? :stick:

Well then, why lap it if you can take it right off (both void warranty)? Waste of time lapping the IHS IMO.
You don't think they wouldn't notice you taking OFF the IHS and then putting it back ON later?
