Hey guys,

Trying to put together a PC-DL that has been on hold for a long time. Need to get a suitable PSU. In the past I've used the 550W Sparkle's but was looking to try something else.

Will this PSU work fine? It has 36A on the 12V available, but they "Dual 12V rails" and I have no familiarity with PSUs like that.

Does it make a difference for our needs?
Will these split or "dual" rails give the Xeons the 12V power they need, or is some of the 12V directed elsewhere?

EG425AX-VE (W) / EG425P-VE (http://www.enermax.com.tw/product_psu_noisetaker420w.htm)

DC Output
+3.3V   +5V   +12V1   +12V2   -12V +5Vsb

~30A   ~30A   ~18A   ~18A   ~0.8A ~2.5A

TIA,
Scott

Good to see you serlv. :)

If you are thinking of buying this for the DX, then I would say get a SPI 550 instead. I use both SPI 460 and SPI 550 for the 32 DXs and they are rock solid. Never had a problem with the 12V line, and some rigs are OCed up to 3.6G.

How's your team doing?

Good to "see" you, too. :)

I am still very fond of this site, forum and team. As far as the team goes, in particular, I'm fond of the camaraderie of the crunchers, and of the spirit of friendship, determination and helpfulness found amongst the members. You guys are doing good!

~~~~~~~~~
How is my teaming doing?
Pretty good. I'm still running FaD, but have left XPC. I feel they are in good hands, solidly in 2nd place ( well, eventually DPC and Free-DC will catch them, but not for a long time ), and could weather the loss of one of their steady contributors.
I started crunching, years ago, running the UD project. My goal was to help in the battle against Cancer. I lost my Dad to cancer and that galvanized me. I started with PC911.com's UD team, and when that forum's team was made to feel unwelcome, after a while, a large chunk of us left and moved to BitbenderTech's UD team. We became quite a force in UD. I met Plum Ugly first at PC911/UD and then we were teammates again at BBT/UD. Eventually, I left UD after becoming disillusioned with it. I felt it was no longer about the research and more about how they could turn "this grid computing" thing into a commercial venture. UD also became less and less responsive to the people who were contributing their own personal resources, in terms of electricity costs, time and hardware.
At some point I made the personal decision to find a better project. That project, for me became FaD. Very responsive "management" >> Keith Davies, a very supportive and involved support website. Faster algorithms, a great client, a large choice of projets an individual could run. Just much better. Keith Davies had written the code for Phase I of UD. When they moved to Phase II they muscled him out. Bad move. His code is so much quicker and productive. Keith started FaD and has been running "great guns forward", ever since.
Anywhoo, I digress. When I stopped running D2OL, I just fired up the FaD client on all my machines. It was still in there, I had just removed the shortcut to it in the StartUp folder. And, naturally, I started running FaD with XPC. But then I found out my "old" crunching-mates had finally seen the light, given up on UD and started a FaD team. So I decided to give them a shot in the arm and hooked up with them. When I joined they went from #48 to #21 overnight! :) Points are moveable in FaD. :) We are doing good; growing and climbing. In terms of daily output we regularly fall somewhere between 7th and 12th.
Best of all, I get to crunch against Cancer, in a project that I am passionate about, which is what drives me. Also, I like to see a team rise up. I like to be of some help. Hell, sometimes I can get a little lost in that; in the surge, in the desire to overtake, in the desire to help drive a team forward.
So, we are doing good. Thanks for asking. :)
yes sparkle or forton are cheeper in price but not in quality.
you might pay a little more then the enermax but the quality will definatly make up for it.
I agree; am running at least 3 or 4 of the Sparkle 550's here right now. Wasjust looking to save a few bucks as an XS member had the Enermax for $60, NIB, listed in the classifieds. Went quick though...
So, I went with a Tagan 480W, another excellent PSU. I have a few running here already, also. One powers a DX rig and another powers my Ultra-D/3800+ Venice system; rock solid rails, 28A on the 12V rail. Got it for $77.xx, shipped. Trying to save a few bucks getting this last DX rig up. It has been sitting here way too long, unassembled!
Thanks, DragonOrta! Good to see you, too. :)
You guys are cookin'! I like the subteam competition thing ya got going on. Can't help but be a good deal for XS's output.
oh we're putting out like a school girl on prom night :D
im really surprised to see how many people here are using the Tagan's in their crunching rig. i have seen alot of people talk poorly of them but if everyone has faith to let them do the crunching i may have to take a look.
my tagan couldn't handle my duallie@3.3ghz, max stable was 3.15 and the rails dipped alot, but it's running stable in my dual tulatin with 15harddrives and it's quiet
