Hi guys,
I just saw that Windows XP Professional 64 bit is available at one of my local stores. It costs the same as the normal 32 bit version, what should I get?
Any help appreciated.

You'll probably get the most overall compatibility with 32 bit. A lots of drivers for xp 64 are just no there yet.

When do you think most drivers will be available? Will we have to wait untill Vista? It's been a long time since Windows XP 64-bit Beta 1.

I have not had a problem with Windows 64. I can use all 4 GB of memory. My MP3 player even has a 64-bit driver and application. My graphics card works great ( 6600 ).
On the other hand, Suse Linux 64-bit can't run with the last GB of memory relocated above 4GB by either software or hardware. Plug and Play works great on 32-bit linux but not on 64-bit. Audio has worked on Suse 9.0 and 9.2, but not on 9.1 and the current 9.3
I received a free copy of Far Cry with my 4400+. It has a 64-bit version so i really wanted to try it out. The installer complains it can't read files from the CD. After many tries I got it installed. The 64-bit content would not install or any of the patches. The game crashes after just a few seconds. So I can't answer if it is stable or works with most games.

for me xp64 increased the voltage required for a stable overclock on my 3200+ winchester. It use to run @ 10x250 @ 1.425v now it takes 1.5v for the same speed /bios settings. my new 3700+ San diego I cant get stable at 2.75ghz, 11x250 ive tried up to 1.62 vcore its very disapointing.
I think xp64 actualy takes longer to load 32bits apps. It just doesnt feel as snappy as 32 was. Some have said games high fps are a little lower but the lows arent as low and I think thats true but I have no data to prove that and could just be placebo effect. 3dmark 2001 I had to install in Win2k compatibility mode to run the benchmark. I had to load VGA drivers @ 2t memory timing on my X800xl or else i would completly hose the install. maybe they have fixed that but I havent taken the chance since. And I dont like how it makes my name administrator on the start menu(nit picking now)
All and all I would have to recomend sticking with xp32 its just feels faster.

I would advise you to get normal xp. The 64-bit just does not have enough support yet.

i say download a 64-bit open sourse operating system for free and forget about blowing cash on that crap called windows but if you really want it go for it, it isn't what I would do but what ever floats your boat...
