if there is a huge difference in price, get the cheaper one. otherwise, i'd pick the opteron. apparently it's a higher quality silicon, and from what we have seen from the single core ones, it has the potential to clock high. however, we dont yet know how they clock across different yields, something you could research with the 4400.

When you look at the opteron 939 single core overclocking results it makes it seem that they put all the good silicone aside for the opteron range, but with dual cores no results have been seen yet.

I'd love to know the answer to this too. X2 3800+ verses the 165 Opteron specifically.

The knowledge base for the X2 is extensive, for obvious reasons. I've combed the internet for days for any indication as to how the dual-core s939 opterons will perform and have come up empty.

Wanting to know that myself too :)
..and will there be a Tyan 939 dual (or more) mobo for these?? :D

Any mobo on skt 939 will be single processor. The best you can do is to have one processor that is dual core.

i believe all the opterons have 1mb cache/core

They do. I'd love to see a 175 vs a 4400+. Those are both 2.2ghz 1mb models, correct?

And it sounded like he wanted to have two 939 opterons on one mobo. Just thought I'd set him straight: If you want two processors then go for skt 940.

i have just seen a shop selling dual 175 opteron cpu
running @ 2.2 ghz 2x 1mb cache. this is the same as the dual 4400+
just wondered what would be better . both r socket 939.

There is a 180 Opteron as well now.

Not that the 175 doesn't.

The upcoming 185 will also be available soon, but it'll have a 125W TDP or some huge number like that. :stick:

Anyway, we don't know how well the DC Opterons will clock but we can assume that they'll do better than the X2s.

Which is better for pure gaming? X2 4400+ or Opteron 175 Dual Core?

/me wants benchs :'(

for pure gaming you are better off with a single core, multi cores really shine on heavy general use though

What UnG said with one caveat....the fact that the two DCs you listed are the same thing! We don't know the OCability of the 175 (AT ALL) so we can only take what we know--stock clocks and cache, which are identical.

If you only want to game, get an Opteron 14x.

yah I know that single cores are better for gaming atm UnG. But I want a future proof proc, and dual core is the obvious choice IMO.

*Btw I found some benchs
