Plenty of nice cheap 48v box fans lying around, no way to use them.
Anyone know of a way to get a 48v fan to run on your typical 12v computer?

?????????????
Thats 110v, not 48v.
Or am I missing something.
Basically, I have a couple 120mm box fans that are marked 48v and have the typical three wire plugs as all 12v box fans do, however, obviously, when plugged in, the fan doesnt work.

You'd need a 48v PSU for the 115 AC or a 48v Power sup for 12v systems. Either way, you need to change some voltages.

like UnG said, you cant run them off you computer psu, you need another one.

He is right. Why don't you strip the wires and connect to a power regulator (those where you can change voltages)

Ah yes, if I had one I would go that way, but I dont and I dont see a good reason in buying an expensive piece of electronics to play with a few dollars worth of fans.
But still, I appreciate the info all, looks like I'm plain out of luck. I should have been quicker to take note of the markings on the fan before purchase. Still, I'm only out around $10 bucks so no big whoop.

what kind of cfm do they get at 48v?

You could build/buy a DC/DC converter to step it up from 12v.

Details on that? Schematics? I could do with a 24v DC/DC Converter...
Have a nice Papst that can kick 285CFM@24v :D

all you need is a transformer, to take your wall voltage from 120 to 48

No this is wrong. It is 48v DC, not 48v AC. Actually, if you wanted to do an AC/Dc converter, you would use a transformer to step the 120Vrms AC down to around 48Vrms AC, then you would need to put it through a diode rectifier with some capacitance at the output to reduce the ripple. A DC/DC converter to step up to 48v from 12vDC is totally different.

To step 12v to 48 would requier MANY large caps...the ac/dc converter would be best and are fairly easy to make to boot...look it up on google a 50v volt varible psu that converts 110...
