Since thw S939 Opterons is a bit difficult to get my hands on. I was thinking about getting a S940 Opteron. Has anyone tried these chips? Are they as good as the S939?

You are aware of the ram requirements of the 940 socket correct?

They dont tend to overclock so well as they are based on the sledgehammer core. They also need registered mem which is v expensive for a good clocking set. On top of this all you need a good s940 mobo which will run costs high. So basically would be better to wait.

E4-revision S940 1XX Opterons don't exist. You'd have to get a 2XX-serie proc to get a E4. CG-procs would be your only choice, hence heat would be a problem at high clocks...
...and they won't scale as high as E4s.

Just be patient. The s939 opteron will start showing up soon in the retail chains... hopefully.

Otherwise with a s940, as stated, you'll have to get server parts (motherboard and memory) which are a lot more expensive and designed for stability and not overclocking. :stick:

940=registered ram, slow chips, and slow expensive mobos. Opterons are over already. There's no more CABNE 0530 APMW steppings being sold AFAIK so no reason to buy one.

Where's the "bad" reports of NON-CABNE chips??

SD 3700+/4000+ quality die and 1Mo for 150$ ... is not good for you ?
You prefer buy a Venice for the same price ?

CABGE are not FX-like, but it's not a bad CPU.

Yes they are great chips. The limitation is the motherboard. Finding good registered DDR is a problem too, although BH and CH sticks exist. Very expensive as well. Not recommended at this point (from someone who is using s940).

People will need to realize that based on the timeline that certain vendors recieved these new chips, the odds are high that the ones Monarch gets are not going to be the CABNE 0530 fx57s. They will still be great chips, but check out computersrmas thread for other possible 939 optie results (not that they are bad in the least bit)

Haven't seen one s939 Opty clock as well as a FX-57. Not sure why you guys think the next batches are going to be bad either. Way too much speculation surrounding these chips. Frankly they seem to clock just like San Diego to me...cooling is the most serious factor in all this.
