Hi All,
I am in the process of building my dream gaming rig, and I was wondering if I should go for the 4000+ (for pure gaming, see my other posts please) or the Opteron 146. You see, I need to know what a 146 gives me that a 4000+ can not, I understand that it is $130 cheaper than 4000+, but since the original CABNE batch is no longer available and with the reports of "newer” stock being based off of 4000+ core, what difference does it make to go thought the hassle and get a 146? Right now I can buy a CABGE (or so I think) 146, but I really need to know if its worth it or not.
Thanks a lot in advance.
The parts that I have bought so far:
DFI nF4 SLI-DR “expert”
2GB DDR1 Crucial Ballistix
BFGTech 7800 GTX
Enermax “Liberty” 620W SLI Certified PSU
74GB WD Raptor
Gaming Bomb II Case (black)

I personally would go for a dual core. Even if it's a gaming machine, you might want to play online, so you going to have anti-virus, firewall and all that crap and the other core running the the game alone.

Look at it this way... if you luck out and get a CABNE core, great, you're getting a rebadged FX basically, however, if you're not so lucky and instead get a newer one based off the 4000+ then hell, you're getting the same chip for $130 less.
$130 is a good bit towards a solid water cooling system.
Either way, you cant lose.

There's no way I'd buy a 4000sd even if I didn't have my optys. The 3700 is a much better deal. I just sold my 3700sd for $210 and it would run OCCT at 2900@1.6. There's a lot of cheap 3700's around that will clock 2.8+. The 4000 was never a great deal.
I don't know your time frame on your build, what is it? Makes a big diff if your talking future or now.
Is there any way to stop that man from bouncing while I read you posts?

Well, Opterons are a hell of a lot cooler than a plain SD for one thing. :D
I have a 939 148 on the way. Hoping for a easy 3ghz w/ Storm/mcp650
Personally, I am still in the single fast core camp at this point in time. When I see tangeable improvements in future game engines with dual procs, I will upgrade to a 939 dual core opteron when they become widely available.

Show me these "low benchies" for 939 Opterons. :fact:

I'd say it depends on your cooling, the 10x on the 146 would be fine for water or air but you may miss the 12x on the 4000+ if using phase change.

What a waste of money. If your going to spend that much get a 148 opty that will do 3300-3400 on phase. The 4000sd is like the 3800 vince, a big waste of $$$ that could go for ram or video card.
If he's just going to be on air or water a 144 or 146 are all you need with an opty.
The other option is to get a 3700sd that someone selling because they got a x2 or opty. I just sold my 3700sd for $210 that did OCCT at 2900@1.6v. Major sold a good one too. Some of these optys don't oc that great and a proven 3700sd at 2850+ for a couple hundred bucks is a deal. The sd's also run a lot cooler then the optys.
Only the early Opterons up to week 0530 did that great.
Laters ones seem to be pretty equal to the San Diegos.

Slightly off topic, but if you are using Firefox and Adblock (I am) then you just right click the irritating images in people avatars and select "Adblock".

I just ordered my Opteron 148 s939. My cpu's usually run at just over condensation levels, 10-20 C depending on season. Cant wait to see what it will do paired with a gigabyte of Geil One Tccd. Great thread. Saved me some change I was sold on a 4000+. Ive been kinda bummed since melting the pcb on my s478 has gotten old. Managed 3.2e to 4.6 ghz with some ozc pc4200 platinum.
:party2: This should get me to order some new tops for some DD blocks. LOL If at least nothing else force me to ditch the coleman cooler I been using as a resevoir for over a year now.
