Cant boot at 2800 with vcore <1.61, is this normal?

I can't get X2 3800+ to boot at 2800 if vcore is less than 1.61. And if I want Pi 1M stable, 1.61 is definitely not enough. What is the problem here?

The cpu is not stable. Up the vcore or lower the frequency. Guess you already knew that. Some cpu can oc like mad, some can't. anything above 2.6ghz 24/7 is very respectable for an X2, certainly for the low-end X2 3800+.

You hit a wall is my guess... my 4400 acts the same way, unfortunately... 1.58v 2.95 stable. Anything after that is like hitting my head against a :brick:

not every proc can get from 2Ghz to 2.8Ghz.. up the voltage and try again..

Ironically my old 4400+ was stable at 2700 and no boot past 2800 no matter what voltage I tried. Now I am wondering if there is something wrong with the RAM (OCZ 3200 Rev 2), or even MOBO. :p:

And another thing is that it takes more voltage to pass dual prime than simply boot, so I don't believe my processor need 1.75-1.8v to be stable at mere 2850.

Well it shouldn't be the mobo and the ram would shouldn't be that way because with the highier multi the FSB shouldn't be as high.. you should put in a know good proc and see if you FSB on the board does 300

U mean drop cpu multi and see if FSB can hit 300? Well, I probably need to use divider on my RAM.

I think I've found the problem. Without divider, I cannot boot at 285 FSB when CPU multi is at 6! I give 2.9v and ram timing is at 3-4-4-12

LOL, does that mean I need better RAMS???

On second thought, check http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=53290 it's hard to hit 300 w/o divider.

Most of the time it just hangs right before CMOS is saved (that's before windows logo appears)

What BIOS version are you using?
With 704-1 / 704-2BTA I cannot boot over 300 MHz fsb. Like your system boot stops at pci irq list. Flashed 623-2BTA now and everthing is fine with 305 MHz, Geil One 2,6V and 2.5 4 3 7. The boot problems are gone. It's definitly the 704 BIOS stopping my system. Reflashed it and the problem reapears.

There is 623-2BTA? Before I used 623-3, and it didn't overclock well, so I flashed it to 704-2BT, which are used by many people here.

From what you posted is a CPU vcore thing. Its just normal you hit a wall indeed. Some clock better the others. If you want to go 2800 try 1.65 just to load windows. It won't burn your CPU. I would not pass 1.7 though. I tested 1.7 with my XP-90C and it get really hot while loading windows but didn't explode

Right now I am at 2600 @ 1.47Vcore, I have been running two instances of D2OL, so far no problem. Last night I did the same thing at 2650 but this morning I woke up and computer froze. So If I can keep D2OL at 2600 for running 24 hours then it's stable for me (I have no plan to play games or do anything else on it besides farming). So can I get it stable at speed higher than 2600? Maybe not by much but I think so, but that probably would need voltage higher than 1.5, which isn't a good thing for air cooling since it's gonna be crunching D2OL 24/7.

Yeah, I am happy with what I have right now. I think I might go watercooling later, just for the heck of it, also a good way to keep a few more weekends busy.

I am also trying to get my x2 4400 past 2700mhz. It is stable right now with load temps below ambient. I tried 1.7v @2800 but I was getting errors in prime95 and my motherboard would do long, loud beeps at me if I tried to do anything 3Dish.

Any suggestions?
