so I built a new computer to use while I was home from college which consists of

A64 2800+ (754)
DFI UT NF3 250GB
512 (x2 256) BH5 PC3000
Radeon 9800SE (Powercolor)
Thermaltake Purepower 420W PSU (40A on the 5v 18A on the 12v 30Aon the 3.3v)

Now, I believe it's mostly a software problem, but it also might be a video card hardware issue as when I try and do anything graphically intesnse the comp freezes for a sec and then VPU recovery comes up and makes me restart. I installed the default drivers with the cd (cat. 3.8) when I try and install the new drivers I get no picture in windows and have to boot in to safe mode and uninstall them and reinstall the old ones. I'm running windows 2000 now with the latest NF3 drivers and yes I am using the 2000 drivers and no it isn't overheating as I have checked the cards temps one hundred times. Tryed cmos resets and various voltage run around and stuff and the card still does it. I checked contact on the core of the card was fine did some new thermal paste. Does anyone have any new ideas for getting it to work better?

I'd go through the bios settings and see if there's anything that needs changing.

Is the AGP aperature set correctly? and the current speed is 66Mhz? do you ahve a diff vid card to try?
Otherewise
The drivers on your CD as are up to date as required for a 9800 in any case, and on WIN 2K especially for performance gains I would stick with 6.14.10.6497 drivers....

Why fight for a newer driver that is going to provide less performance?

lock the PCI clock and upgrade to a superior operating system..
I vote BSD

Sure load BSD on an unstable situation... good thinking!

Well even with the default drivers from teh cd it gives me lock up crap when I try and do anything 3d, so I am thinking it's either windows or the card itself.

You have the correct revision of the nforce chipset drivers installed ? if so I would suspect the card

Yes, I got them right from nvidia's site, but I think I'm gonna try windows XP and see if it's just the software locking the card up. Who knows I may get lucky.
