View Full Version : FX-53 hard time OCng
Hiya'
I'm not getting far on OCng this FX53/mem.
It's on a MSI K8N Neo2 nF3 plat.
I read your mobo oc guide, the bios is right, CnQ disabled, agressive timing off -- fan header plugged in, et al.
And see that OCZ PC3700EB is not recommended  i bought parts a year ago
Is that a hard and fast misfit rule, or has a miracle timing been discovered?
The vidcard 6800GT oc's great but .. . . i want more :slobber:
ps: and puhleeze! don't yell at me for posting an old chip 'n board!!
Here's some screenies for ref

FX 53s are still fast as hell man, I used my pc3500 EB on my neo 2 and worked awesome. Loved the combo actually
On K8N Neo2 plat? K, dat's good news!
What timings didja' use?
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=43033
you could tighten the timings on that ram alot...
Like i ain't tried. Is it a secret? What Timings??
hey its also possible your fx-53 just doesnt oc that well. my fx-53 toped out around 2700mhz and that was using phasechange. i think the fx-55s and fx-57s oc alot nicer then the earlyer fx chip did. good luck man hope you get what your looking for.
peace perc,
Thanks Perc, I'd be happy to get 2700mhz stable with this. Was your's bychance on a K8N Neo2 plat with EB ram too?
In this XS link for K8N Neo2 nforce3 gouge http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=43033 was a good "What to watch out for". It stated that "doesn't like OCZ EB". I followed the other tips no joy but the gouge is old and some links are broken, so I was asking if someone had found good timings for it since then.
Guess not, I just hated to put xpensive sticks in the spare parts box.
ps, "hope you get what your looking for." would be a good OC :)

Hey Rex. :D I see you've joined!! Good for you man :).
Anyway, try the settings..2.5-3-3-6.
If they don't work, possibly 2.5-4-3-7.
I don't know much about this ram but I'm definentally sure you can get the timings lower, like another person stated.
Your PSU definentally isn't the issue, what BIOS are you running?
I'll try and get my buddy |3ourne to help you out, he can work some magic. :)
EDIT: Whoa Rex, your RAM's runnin 2T. Put'r at 1T and your system will FLY.
lol, hiya' Nick ;~)
Ye joined to find if the oc gouge ""doesn't like OCZ EB" was still true. Plus this forum looks like OC'ers Heaven.
I went 1T and no boot, clear cmos. Anands sez PC3700EB is only good at 2T, go figger.
Tried different timings for 16 hours and more, no joy, i'll try your rec's :)
It they don't work, am looking at the xs members rec'd GSkill TCCD PC4400 or OCZ PC3200 rev2 plat.
Bios 1.3_, will update to 1.37mod.
Edit: Don't look for bourne, i'll get it with a l'il help here ;).
yes i did run the msi nf3 board when i first got the fx chip but quikly switched over to dfi when they came out (if you rember back then msi was the only good ocing board out for 939) i had no luck with the msi mb i actualy hated it. most people swear by msi but ive always had crap luck with them for some reason
BTW: welcome to the forums :welcome:
peace perc,

Eh....I don't think it's the Mobo. The MSI K8N Neo2 Plat is an overclocking Legend...
Anyway..Rex, how much vCore were you giving the proc when OC'ing..also, what are your temp's?
You may want to pick up a Thermalright XP-120 someday, that'll drop your temp's like a rock.
Bumped vcore up 0.05v to 1.55v, though CPUz reported 1.504v.
Bumped the vdimm up 0.05v too ...
Temps are outstanding w/ this Zalman 7000; 46C core and 34C probe-on-chipcase. I'm ventilated real well in this Praetorian case too, 9 fans total.
lol, remember the XP-120 don't fit this mobo, caps and dimms too close to socket).
ps: Nick you're nearly ready for your Neo4 / Venice build woot!
Thanks for the welcome Perc :D
I hear ya', some MSI Neo2 nf3 boards gave probs, but i've no indication that this one is 'bad'. It's behaved well since August '04, i "feel" it's the RAM, unfortunately no proof.
Or it's just me and these clumsy knuclear knuckles messing with the timings :slap:
Prolly going with DFI NF4 SLI-DR for the X2 build, and I'm keeping this FX-53 too cuz it's a great workhorse, just can't get the chip/mem OC'd very well

I say get some new RAM. It cant hurt, you can just use it in your main rig for now, then use it in your X2 rig l8r, then pop the 3700EB back in.
Like I said, Rex, take a look @ the GeIL One Series, TCC5 model's.
"like i said" lol, the peeps here that had this mobo say the RAM i mentioned above is what works.
at $200gb it's worth following the practical experience. If you had linked a MSI Neo2 nf3 that used the Geil TCC5 for a stable oc, i'd have looked at it and would order it.
Will try the timings you mentioned (at 2T), and if it works then I LOVE YA' MAN :buddies: and owe ya', like, like, 2 prime rib dinners or somethin' :buddies:
If it doesn't work then I'll pick up some new RAM cuz it's wits-end time
This hi-point WU will complete in a few hours... :)
Half-a-Woot! The OC ended at 2520MHz, 3-3-2-8 2T, DDR466, where i'll keep it.
Tried Multi up to 13, many mem timings including those recommended, adjusted clock (FSB) incrementally up to 230mhz (FSB), HTT @ 3 & 4 yaddayadda. Wore out the cmos jumper.
It helps a few of the benchies, maybe Folding will go a l'il faster too.
Anyhoo, i'll live with 210x12 until new RAM smiles upon me.
Thanks :)
