i have a nekked venice 3000+ in an Epox 9ndaj mobo and with 1.55 volts going througn it i can run stable @ 2.75 all day long but my mobo tells me that my CPU temp is 54C and i have a TT Big Typhoon on it. I thought these temps were a little high so i want a got a thermal probe and put it about .5 to 1cm from the core to read the temps. The thermal probe reports that the temp is 47C and on a side note when i touch the heat pipes at full load they feel that they are at about room temperature maybe a little hotter, in compations to my 3.2 prescott that i have a TTBT on when i touch the heat pipes of that computer at full load they are hot and it is only at 60C. I also know that the pressy puts out MANY more watts of heat than the venice and that could be some of the difference in the temperature of the heatpipes.

my question is with my thermal probe being .5 to 1cm from the core make the difference in temps that i am seeing or is the mobo reporting the temps a little high. I have never used a thermal probe before and i would appreciate some help with this issue.

The best way is to use thermalcouple and place it right in the center of IHS surface, because the die size is only 1cm by 1cm whereas IHS is more like 3.5cm by 3.5cm, so if you can only probe the edge of that thing it is not accurate.

my IHS has been removed and the thermal probe is ~.5cm from the actual core not the IHS.

it is about 3/4 of the way between the core and the little things on the cpu die, closer to the core than the little things.

That's even worse. Because the heat transfer between die and the PCB is much worse than that in contact with IHS.

OK i move the probe so it is touching the core and reset the heatsink and the mobo temps are correct, but with the reset i got the temps to go down by ~3C so i guess it is ok.

i just don't see how my venice can run at 50C with 1.55volts and Absolute_0's X2 will run in the mid 40c range with 1.6volts.

This boggles the mind, oh well i will continue to play with it.

good luck and careful with probe and die.
