I was going to build a machine based on Intel because I am going to start to review hardware and I need a modern machine and I thought because of these reasons.
1. DDR2
2. PCI Express on a Same Platform as DDR2
3. Modern System that I can use heatsinks and waterblocks on.
But after reading this thread Any reason to go intel (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=76201) I thought about going the 939 opteron route seeing as most of them go 3.0ghz on air. But AMD is going to be releasing M2 with DD2 in 6 moths to a year. So I don't know what to do. Some Advice Please in both AMD Intel and Parts. Thanks for You Help.

It's funny, I was just reading a post and thinking that the optys I have oc as easy as a xp 2800 in a nf7s r2 and I look in your sig and you have one. :) You are always behind when it comes to computer hardware. You have to either make up your mind to buy everytime a better, faster cpu, mb, video card or ram comes out or just buy what is best for you now and be happy. I know a guy who is a computer tech and he is still using a 386. They do keep working even when a new cpu socket or ram(ddr to ddr2) comes out. You can't worry about tomorrow, just do what's best for today.

Dont mind dogsx2 ... he has yet to realize that this is XTREMEsystems.org :D
939 Opteron will destroy any desktop intel processor right now in gaming and what not and is pretty easy to oc to ~2.8.

But would it be smart to go opty and then just upgrade the mobo and proc and ram in 6 month or stay at socket 775 and just upgrade to a dual core in 6 months

I have a 144 & 146 so I do know a little about them. I thought I said don't worry about the new socket coming out, just get what's right for you now(opty). Maybe my shouldn't have said anything about a 386. I'll put it in clear language:
Get the either a 144 or 146 and you will be happy. The 144 I have clocks about the same as my 146.
Perkam, I am from 50mi up the road from you but now live in Ga, maybe I picked up an accent that threw you off.

If your worried about upgrading, here's a cheap board that you can use the next socket on and it will oc. I bought one myself.

Its not the PCI-Express that bothers me its the mobo and proc and ram I would have to update in 1 year if I go AMD.

You didn't update in a year when you bought the rig your on now, did you? You don't have to update when the new socket w/ddr2 comes out unless you want to. Your not going to get a cheap setup like you can now with an opty. now is a very good time to update.

Point taken dogsx2, my bad ;)
But l2g2003, you need to balance your rig out so that you have parts that WONT be outdated in one year and ones that will still be powerful enough vs socket m2.
There are STILL cpus on 754 that are faster than cpus on 939, so dont think ALL M2's will all of a sudden be a tremendously faster than an opty at 2.8...which is quite a bit computing power right there.
I'd focus more on getting a nice 7800/x1800 along with any setup to keep it from getting outdated.
