I'm going back through my installs and optimizing them for the different rigs. One question I haven't had clearly answered in my searches is....

On an HT enabled proc, am I better off running 1 or 2 instances?

I would guess two becuase there are 2 cores. Thats the way it is on D2ol though.

But they aren't two cores really, there are two virtual cores which is quite different. I know adding a second thread to an HT processor slows down the first thread - though with less of a performance hit than a non HT enabled proc. I'm just curious if there is a definitive answer. I know it will slow down completion of a the first work unit, but will I get two work units done faster using this quasi paralellism than I would if I ran them in serial fashion?

Edit: Whoa... forcing SSE on in an AMD proc can make quite a difference too, gotta love the tweaks

Oohh, didnt read our first post completely. I think most of the people with P4's in D2OL run 2 instances. U could always try and if u start to lose some points uninstall it, right?

I found this thread on another board in response to my own question

http://forums.extremeoverclocking.com/showthread.php?p=1604806#post1604806

Basically it makes no real difference....

It depends on the WU's being processed... some will see up to a 33% gain in points, others will show almost nothing. Stanford would rather you run only one session per real CPU as it's better for the research.

I hope you can get 300Ghz overclock out of each CPU... otherwise you'll be sitting in third place is less then 30 minutes :D
