I will have a DFI ultra D mobo and i've been told that the TT BT needs some special screws... i want to make sure i have everything so can anyone recommend the screws i need to get and where to get them?
Thanks!

All i know is the screws that come with the BT are fine, its DFI to blame for having a non standard backplate, so i cant give you a size of screw, your gonna need wait till you get your BT then go to hardwarer store and get simular diameter screws a touch longer, or you could jsut fit a new backplate and bin the DFI one.

I bought screws separatly, and since we don't use " as the standard for screw sizes at least here in Finland where we use millimetres I had to buy slightly bigger ones. The screws itself fitted fine in the DFI backplate even if they were slightly wider, but the nuts I had to polish only a little and then they fitted perfectly into the DFI backplate. Result was great, rocksolid stability. No lapping, or other mods to it was made. My SD 3700+ @ 2.71GHz 1.65V runs ~28 - 33C idle and 40 - 43C load depending on room temp. Might increase vcore even more up to 1.7V and see how far it goes. Got a bad 3700+ sample.

I kept the DFI yellow back plate on my Ultra D m/b and used 6x32 flat head machine screws 2 inches long with wing nuts.

I did what you did and it works great. I would recommend using the screws and wing nuts and lapping the bottom. The bottoms have poor machining on them and are not flat and have dips so contact is very poor.
1 1/2 inch 6-32 round head screws are what you want. The yellow back plate is what to use. Just leave the nuts in the back plate and screw the screws thru them, that way they can't turn when you tighten the wing nuts.
Thanks chikyblink for the pictures.

Hmmm....looks like the TDX mounting should work well with the BT, I'm really considering ditching my watercooling and just going with air.

I had thought about going lc but with the new coolers, there's not much difference. It's not like it was pre 64 when you had to lc to get better clocks.

Yeah, I'm in a tough position because I'm already using and have paid for the WC....anyway, I changed my mind and figured out a way to get more from my WC for 24/7 and not much money. ;)

I just ripped my XP-90 off and installed a TT Big Typhoon on my 3800 X2 :D load temps dropped from 53 to 42 at 2.65Ghz @ 1.4Volts.

Fantastic difference, I'll be doing the same soon too.
What screws did you use 47? Any problems?

I pulled the screws through the bottom of the stock backplate so the phillips head side was on the back of the mobo and the bottom of the screw came up through the front and put a washer and a gold standoff thing and screwed on the nuts on the top and it worked fine.
May sound weird but it works I used the screws it came with too no probs.

Was that "xp-90" the xp-90c or just a plain xp-90? Also, what type of fan did you have on the XP90 (at least what CFM) and what fan do you have on the Big Typhoon now? You had a significant drop at load and I'm trying to understand all the factors that might have caused the drop other then the change from XP90->BT. I have the XP90C and was thinking about going to the BT but I'm not sure it's worth it.

He cant tell you factors as every rig is different, the fact is TR are overrated and most use with a loud case fan like tornados and the TT-BT is a great 120mm heatsink not 90mm heatsink, enough to tell me why it wins
If you cant decide now by every review on WWW or in here from peeps fisnings you better stay with your TR, there are plenty TR fanboys who used to scream TT are crap in here anyhow.

I had a plain XP-90 with one of these fans http://store.yahoo.com/svcompucycle/kd1209ptb2-4-86.html
Yes, I know there are many factors that come into play and many www reviews that show one better then the other under all sorts of conditions, however I'm just interested in one: the fan CFM factor between the two HS. Very simple question, and I don't know why the fanboy comment is relevant to my question - i'm not fanboy one way or the other.

Thanks for the info 47, the BT gave you fantastic results. Maybe I'll give the BT a try.

I was not refering to you as fanboy just in general, there isnt 1 review could show a TR 90mm heatsink beating the TT-BT if they had = set ups like fan noises etc, you may get the TR too cool more if you had a deafening fan on it but thats lame.
GEt a TT-Bt and lap it 1st, you would be disappointed.
I agree with you on the noise part and in general, and have ordered the BT. Hopefully, I'll get good performance with less noise over the XP90C.

Perhaps you had a problem with instalation. I have a XP-90C with similar fan and my full load temps are about 45-48, with 1.6v core!

I don't mean to jack this thread, but i also have a question.
Is it safe to use this cooler with a naked X2 3800+?
Reasons why i'm doubting it's safe:
- It's a tall cooler, big lever.
- The screws of the mounting bracket on the dfi are horizontal, allowing the cooler to apply more force onto the lower edge of the core when the case is standing up straight.
- If you look at the shape of the 3800 core it's rectangular and it's horizontally oriented which also encourages the cooler to crack the lower edge of the core.
- It's a tall cooler, big lever.
Seems quite dangerous to me... Is everyone using bumpers, or just keeping their board flat?

I'm not using any bumpers, nor is my board lying flat. I haven't had any problems so far with my cooler and naked core. I can't speak for anybody else, but I consider this as safe as long as you are careful when mounting.

Sweet, i just read some more threads.. Others don't seem to have problems either :) (you do have the toledo core though, which is more square shaped)
I guess the cores are stronger than i thought, but it's always better to be more on the safe side than to destroy your hardware ;)
Thanks :toast:
