I've been wanting to strip my venice for quite a while...but with my previous xp-120, the mounting would be a challenge.(Clip-ons aren't exactly favourable for this)
So off with my xp-120 n in comes the BigTyphoon, which is screw mounted. Hell, i should've bought Bigtyphoon from the start. Definitely better den the overated xp-120 imo. I got cooler temps n higher overclockability with it. Problem is, the base finishing is horrible. Thats where lapping comes in. Since this is my 1st lap job, i wasn't sure how much to buy so i bought 1 of each. 220, 400, 600, 800 n 1000grit. My plan is not to make it uber shiny but flat n scratchless.

Lets see the base before lapping.

After lapping.

Notice the red circle i've marked. This spot remains untouched by my sandpapers. Due to shortage of 220grit i can't get it all flat.:unhappy: This shows how 'unflat' the base is.

Next, some surgery on my venice. I 1st tried using a penknife but the blade is too thick. Best is razorblades i guess.

Here's (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showpost.php?p=1028186&postcount=30) a good indication of how deep u should cut in.
When u cut, dun use the slicing motion. Instead, push your blade in n do the rocking motion slowly.

After some sweating, off comes the IHS.

Notice the red circle again. Seems like i've cut in too deep n chipped 1 of the small thingys!!:shock2: Will this be the end of my venice??
Well when i put it back in to test, long beep. Crap. I've done it. I've killed my 1st chip. Never one to give up easily, i took it out to inspect 1 more time. After much squinting, i spotted a bent pin! I bent it back n it started up without problems thank God.

Next up adding a thermal probe to monitor temps.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/chikyblink/IHS008.jpg

Finally, BigTyphoon is screwed down with a couple of wingnuts bought separately.

However after all this, results aren't very rewarding. Temp readings from onboard seemed the same with the IHS off. With the thermal probe, its reading temps abt 1.5degrees higher at default settings. But at 1.65v 2.7ghz, its reading 3 degrees lower den wats on my mbm5.
Reading from mbm5 on load=40
Reading from Aerogate II=37
So which will i trust now? I've made sure the thermal probe is touching the core. Not calibrated perhaps?

Anyway this has been fun and i hope u can learn something from my experience.

My Compunurse Advanced is placed exactl where yours is, but I put some AS5 on it for good measure. It reads exactly the same temps as the on-die, but it reads them slower, probably becuase it's just outside the core. So even though I was a doubter, it seems my on-die is decently accurate.

I think for bare cores, thermal paste like Creamique seems to fare better than AS5. AS5 is more suitable for larger surface area like the IHS.
Also, i'm thinking of sticking my probe onto the base of my BigTyphoon(not on the core area of course). Will it read more accurate temps?

Actually I found zero difference between AS5 and Ceramique on a naked core....and I mean zero degrees C difference....but your mileage may vary as always

Zero difference? I guess i'll just try out myself to find out. I think the mounting counts alot too. How tight is considered tight enough? I dun wanna crush my core.

I really crank it on, in fact I tighten it while I am watching the actual temperature in BIOS. If it continues to fall I tighten it more. When it stops falling, I stop tightening. It won't break if both sides are pulled down evenly, it's unequal pressure that shatters them.

I did the same with the autocascade on the Dothan...

I will try BT soon, now I am still using xp-120 but it totally sucks because I bent heatpipes too much while trying to make a perfect contact and it doesn't work they way it should. Also removed those six points like in the picture. Screw type coolers are much better.

i have a dejavu! :D

if your temp arnt good may be your heatsink touch the socket .. it's a bit highter than the core so that the heatsink base require a little climb like in my venus 12.

Just the other day as I was rebuilding my rig I tightened the bolts down so hard that one of them snapped. The ol' Sandy is still fine though, no IHS as always.

Watching temps in bios is the only way to do it if you ask me tighten until temps stop dropping then give it a little more and let her be.

Not to detract from the thread, but where do you buy these thermal probes and what do you connect them to?

I'm using the Coolermaster Aerogate II. DO a search to find out more. :)

Are those M4 or M3 nuts and bolts? i just bought a bunch of M4 ones (i don't have my BT yet) but now i'm wondering if they aren't going to be a little too big ;)http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=38862&stc=1

I second the opinions of Ugly n Grey, Firedragon and craig588 - you do need to clamp your heatsink/WB very tightly. I screwed mine in as tight as I could possibly go with a screwdriver, then finished off with a ratchet driver.

Word to the wise - my experience persuaded a guy I know on Hardforums to take his IHS off. Once he'd mounted his waterblock he decided to try and twist it to get a better position. And that was the end of his 4000+. So once it's mounted, DO NOT TOUCH THE HEATSINK. If you have to handle the board, pick it up by the edges.

No they look OK, I think they will fit, you can always ream the hole in the heatsink mount a little if need be , But I think the mobo will accomodate it fine :)

Thanks! ;) I guess it's not a big deal to get others if i need to but i can't wait :D i want to have everything ready.

Maybe we can buy some TT shares and go short on zalman ones

hmm I'm thinking this will be a nice change from my boxed cooler. Remove IHS, put on good paste and a good cooler.... maybe I can get 2.6 out of her
