WARNING XTREME NEWBIE QUESION!

Ok I've got this PC laying around that I wanna put it in a good use.
I wanna use it as either a proxy server.
or Voip server (is there such a thing?)
or a file server or a media server
or, if this is possible, all of the above
Plus I wanna do some folding.

So, is it possible? If so how?

What pc is it? Specs? If it is not too old, you could do all of them, I think...

Yhea espesially if it's a P4 (hyperthreaded :) )

THose are nice for multiple use servers. Xeons really rock the house (and are VERY cheap when buying them via a D2OL team member)
and are SUPER for Server application(they ARE server CPU's) but A early P41.7Ghz or something with hyperthreading, a 512MB RAM (preferably more) will be able to do all of the above AS LONG AS you don't have like 100 users CONSTANTLY downloading from the file server and on the VOIP and whatever because then you'll need a more robust solution like a Dual Xeon or a opteron setup. BTW for multiple use servers RAM= Life and a good HDD also so watch for those. More RAM can often (read in a lot of cases) increase the performance whie for a mere fraction of the cost it would need to upgrade to another mobo/CPU

Great, you ask a question but miss the most important part of it - server specification. Write it here and then you will have more specific answer

Peace

Sorry! My bad. I just wanted to learn if it is possible to do all those things before even give you guys any info about the hardware. Ok. Here it goes:

3.2Ghz P4 EE (Gallatin Core)
Supermicro P4SCT+II i875P Mobo
2 GB Corsair xms 3200LL
2x 36GB Hitachi Ultrastar 15K rpm Scsi Drives
LSI Logic Scsi 320 Pci-x Adapter
480W Fanless Psu

No video (Supermicro has an integrated 8mb ATI Rage), no sound, no cd drive (can be arranged), no case (can be arranged).
Thanks in advance for suggestions.

You can run as good as anything on it. if not all. Depends on the load. A lot of VOIP users AND a lot of FTP users/ file downloads you'll CPU and or RAM will be loaded with Data so you can run anything you waqnt, but when to many users are logged on to your comp the rig won't be able to sustain that load for long.

Dual Xeon rigs will but your rig will be kinda limited. Add another 2 Gig of RAM to that machine and your good to go to do anything you want

Thanks! Can I also run this rig as a hardware firewall and do all the other things too?

A web proxy/firewall server you can absolutely use it to do as well as file server and media center server.

Not sure what needs are for voip server.

Is this for home or business use, if for business, describe the environment (as much detail as you feel comfortable with).

This is strickly for home use. These parts are leftovers from my old rig. I was going to sell them but i don't think ppl would be interested with them since they are kinda out of ordinary. It's not a gaming rig, not a work station or server solution either. So. i'm thinking to put them in a good use as a proxy server and/or file, media, print server or all of the above.

a p4 EE is kinda wild for home use, I'm sure a gamer could put it to good use

<.<

Any reason in particular you want to use the server as a proxy?

That P4 IS a wild thing but hey, it will make a very good server. And yes a firewall you can make of it but no hardware firewall as their is no such thing. A firewall is always software based. No logic circuit can make a difference between a "good" packet and a "bad" packet. But proxying and firewalling, NO PROBLEMO

Just pick your favorite *NIX version or WIn2003 and your on your way :)

I would suggest Win2003 though because of its shear ease of use and setup vs *NIX if your a *nix beginner.
