Can somebody recommend a silent AMD PC cooler which just stacks high, but is not any wider than a stock HSF?

Let me illustrate the problem with a photo:

http://www.cons.org/tmp/opteron-hsf.jpg

This is my dual Opteron board. It is a normal size ATX board which is nice but leads to severe shortage of space to mount good coolers.

I need a better heatsink/fan for the second (left) CPU.

As you see there is no space towards the left. Even if I didn't have the bigass heatpipe on the right CPU, to the left there is not a single millimeter more than the originl HSF takes.

Any recommendations?

The HSF can be exactly 70mm wide. There is no go for anything 80mm.

I looked at the AeroCool GT which is 70mm in one dimension (good) but it is the wrong dimension (horizontally in my picture, so it won't fit).

I'm not being a smartass here. I think the only option you may have for good cooling would be a waterblock ;)

heh yeah id go for watercoling in your situation too

If I were you I would go with watercooling.. It will solve all of your problems.. :D

Heh took me 15 secs to understand what the Hyper 6 was cooling :) You should just sell the Hyper 6 and get a couple of more frendly HSFs (2 x XP-90/C might fit)

I think water SUCKS especially for a dual system which is probably not overclocked (a lot). Would be a waste of money by me.

(these 2 might work, not sure if they are turned the right way)

The ultra is an 80mm wide system, so won't help.
Check out frostytech.comww.overclockers.com for some ideas/reviews (TTIC may be a possibility)

And move the exhaust fan to the outside of the case and you will feel SOOOO much better.

If you look at the bracket that's holding his exhaust fan on, you would notice that it's shaped to the "cutaway" for the backplane. He might not be able to move that bad boy. Then again, with a little creative fabrication, it's definitely possible.

dual MCX6400-Vs/MVX-64-Vs would probably fit... approximately the same size as the retention frame give or take a few mm

Where there is will (& rivet tool/ sheet AL, tin snips, etc.) is WAY!!! :hammer: :fact: :woot:

The left CPU has even less room to the left (where the I/O shield is) than to the right where the Cooler Master is. Removing the Cooler Master didn't get me any farther so far.

Yeah. I would go water with a different box but this one is for permanent running, and as you say there's no advantage to be gained, no clock control at all in this rig.

However, I thought it might be Really Cool[tm] to have two Zalman Reserators, one for each CPU :)

The problem is not the bracket or the fan. Under the fan is all the I/O junk and capacitors, that is limiting me to 1/2 of 70mm to the left.

The best idea I came up with so far (apart from dual reserators of course :) ) is to take one of the Zalman flowers (7000 or 7700 CU) and just rip off enough of the copper wings until it fits :D

except reserators are utter trash... big, overpriced, and underperforming ;)

So I heard. But they look cool and I don't need any kind of good cooling performance anyway.

Better yet, do that to my work dual Opteron and then complain to operations they should get moving ordering new pumps for me :D

I must be missing something here. You want a better than stock cooler (you even mention butchering a aftermarket cooler which will make it perform worse) for a non overclocked cpu  Why :p:

In this machine it is about noise only.

I am considering getting a mainboard with overclocking capability, though.

The irony here is that I actually have a case for an extended ATX board, unused, and tangle with this cramped normal ATX size dual Opteron board. That's not right somehow.

I'm with Maxx and having owned a lot of these things, I say for excellent cooling water is the only way to go. Getting two decent coolers and then trying to exhaust the heat on a regular sized case is nigh on impossible with air.

When I stick them in 2U cases, I install Cooljag coolers, but I'm not OCing them so the heat isn't bad.

If you don't care about overclocking, I would still go watercooling. You don't even care about performance, just get a cheap/decent watercooling KIT. It'll solve all your problems. Or just get high end water cooling stuff, and then you'll be setup when you want to upgrade & overclock.

Thanks, guys.

I decided to sell this combo. I'm not willing to put up with noise, can't go water since it's 24/7 and I don't have a applications that wouldn't be able to live in 2GB.
