Any GTO/GTO2 > 16 pipelines results yet?

I noticed on techpowerup some ppl modded the Sapphire GTO2 to 16pipes with high result rate, and some even modded the Connect3D GTO to 16pipes, does anyone else have succes/faliure experience with those or other make off GTOs

From what I've heard the GTO2 is a limited product run meant to get rid of excess R480 inventory, which is why Sapphire doesn't list the product on its own site. (Two other GTO cards are listed.) Of course that's just forum "wisdom." God only knows what ATI is up to these days.

I'm seriously thinking of pulling the trigger on this one, if I can get ~$150 for my X800 XL. According to the sites doing the mod, they've had a 100 percent success rate so far.

I have a X800GTO², unlocked the 4 pipes successfully, OC'ed to 600/600 with stock cooling/volts. OS show it like a X850 Series after unlocking, as X800GTO before. It cost me 230€ + shipping, a x850XT is at over 350€ at least... :p:

I got GTO2 yesterday (from Newegg) and it unlocked easily with bios flash. The included Sapphire TRIXX utility detected 511/563 on the medium "performance" mode and I've completed multiple stable runs of 3D03/05, VST at 520/560 with no visible problems, but ATITool's artifact scan gets hits every second or so, even at stock speeds (I'm not sure what that's about).

just onlocked my gto2 to 16 full pipes and its now clocked at 564/630. imma go do an 05 run now and hope for 7k edit 6600 on stock cooler, no ac5, just 300 points below my 7800gt that died from heat exahaustion. these things are great :D

Look here, it tells you exactly what to look for in ATItool to tell if your card is unlockable or not. The GTO's don't have quite as high of a success rate as the GTO2's do.

I know how to flash BIOS'. I modded my old 6800's BIOS to give me 1.4v vCore. I only kept it that way temporarily to see what I cld squeeze out of it but, I'm not a total nub ;).

OK, I'm going out of my goddamn mind here. Got my GTO2, and it works stock, but....

I've flashed mainboard BIOSes, created boot disks out the wazoo, and slipstreamed SP2 into a WinXP install...but now I can't create a functional :banana::banana::banana::banana:ing (yes, it's worth the bananas I'm so pissed) bootable CD containing the FlashROM utility. And needless to say, I'm one of the geniuses who said "bah, who needs a floppy these days?"

Using Nero 6 Ultimate's bootable CD dialog, I end up with a bootable CD that freezes my system and says this:

EMM386: Warning! Address line A20 already enabled.

I've googled that, and now I'm more confused than ever. Apparently in the BIOS there should be an A20 or Turbo Switch option to enable/disable -- but not in the DFI 704-2BT there isn't, at least not that I can find.

So next I tried creating a boot disk according to this guy's method (http://www.nu2.nu/bootcd/), and ended up with a CD that says something along the lines of "ROOT FAT GO!" and promptly freezes. (I'm not kidding. It really says that. Even the exclamation point.)

So obviously I'm retarded, or maybe I just need to do this stuff sometime when I've slept in the last 36 hours.

Any advice before I take a crowbar to my rig?

I received my replacement today for my first GTO2 which I returned because it would not pass ATITool artifact checker even at default speed (though it performed and oc'ed ok). The replacement passes artifact test and benches at 540/620 while unlocked. It will probably go higher, but even if it doesn't I'm satisfied with the performance.

* Hold down the shift key and click on "settings"
* Now scroll to the bottom of the list, you should see four new values listed. (The screenshot here is from an X850 XT PE)

ATI tool shows 16active pipelines, running 3D05 now at 520/540 :D

comparing to my experience youll hit 540/590 no problem, my if i clock up to 570 core though my system hangs so lets see what you get :D

Read a topic on a German forum today where 6-7 guys succesfully flashed their Connect3D X800GTO cards to X800XT.
Yesterday, I saw that same card laying on the shelf of the store I buy most of my stuff.
Quickly called them and asked if they still had it (it was the only one).
Was still there. Drove to the store after work and picked it up.
The manager was very interessted to see if the card would unlock (so he could get himself one :D )

The card looked exactly the same as my regular X800XT. After preparing the necesary files for flashing, I went ahead.
Card successfully flashed at X800XT, 16p. Recognized as R423 by ATI Tool.

Made a quick 3D05 run to check the performance.
Scored 6433 marks on a non tweaked system, card slightly oc'ed at 520/540.

The PCI-E power connector is a good sign, probably don't have a 110nm core.

Highest I've benched is just a few points shy of 7K. With another notch and a boost on the CPU I could make it; wondering if it's worth the trouble for the right to say I got 7K 2005 from a $199 card?

Nope, I meant the X800XT, like said before.
I followed the guide from a german forum, used the Powercolor X800XT bios to flash it.

When I made the call, I asked if he could take the cooler off, which he did.
The card looks exactly the same as my BBA X800XT, no R480 on the GPU but X800, like my original one and the one posted on hexus.

It was my understanding that the gto could have a couple different cores meaning that it has the potential to become either an x800xt or x850xt, but the gto2 is garunteed to be an x850xt because they all have r480 cores, but I might be mistaken.

These are some sweet results, my gto2 should be here tomorrow or monday...just need an opteron and motherboard...it will be a very pretty paper weight for a few weeks :toast:

As for the X800XT or X850XT is their any real differences to the max ovrclk we will see. From wht I remember the max ovrclks of both cores are very similar correct? With either core, we should be hoping for nice silicon, being the most important factor

Hey NickS is it possible you could check your core?? I would like to know wht your core says on it. I think this is very importnat information for XS members, i tell you why. Some of the reports of Connect3D GTO not working have been put down to the core type. Well we know tht Jupiler core does not have R480 on it but X800 and it works, now if your card has R480 on it and it works we will have two XS members reporting successful unlocking of both cores on Connect3D GTO cards

Anyway, it's OT and not pertinent, it just caught my eye.

EDIT: upon further inspection, those cores aren't the same....the GTO's is wider, meaning that, while it does say X800 like the XT does, it doesn't mean it'll have 16 working pipes and it's just as random as it was before :(

From all this conversation I realized that all of the Sapphire GTO2's would have a 100% chance of success for getting to 16 pipelines. I have a 256 mb Sapphire X800GTO Fireblade Edition Pci-ex. card on my computer clocked just as 400/980 with 12 pipelines active by default just like the gto2's. When I checked with atitool it says that I have R480 core gpu. However I read the article on techpowerup for the modding process and I don't have those F's as stated over there. Do I also have a chance of softmodding this card? If I flashed a 256mb Sapphire X850XT bios, would I damage the card or would it work? Maybe some hardmodding required but I must know if those 4 pipelines work well in order to hardmod the gpu. So I appreciate if you could help me solving this issue. Thank you

It doesn't look wider to me.
It's the inscription that's more centered on the GTO than on the X800XT. Maybe that's why it looks wider.

it has slipped my mind on how to check but it shouldnt hurt to try, just make sure to lower your mem by about 50-70 before applying the clocks because they run faster, but hotter

Is that good or bad? Would some Arctic Silver help? During the test, i set the fan on to full towards the end, and temps dropped from 65ish to 57 during load :)

I guess its time to say goodbye to my ol' faithful 6600GT. Had it for over a year..bought it when they just came out. Used to do 565/1192 MHz and I had a lot of fun with it. It'll be missed :(

I'm currently scanning @ 560/570 with no artifacts yet. If it keeps that up I'll start benching. Don't expect anything mind shattering with a 2.65ghz winnie and value ram though :D

OK i just ran 560/575 and it's fine. 570 core freezes my computer and 580 gets pixel errors. This is on STOCK COOLING with fresh as5 so that may get better when I get some ramsinks and better cooling. My core hit 77c while running artifact scanner for 10 mins though, which is just rediculous, but ATi Tool's scanner is very harsh and I have yet to see any game get my core past 60c on my x800pro. Benches are going to be ran right now, I'll show results when done =)

Well I was hitting 6336 with old install of windows, old ATI drivers and A64 winny @ 2.3ghz. VC was at 540/590.

I havn't touched a P4 in ages, but I wouldn't say your doing horrable. ;)

Everyone should be sure and check out the newest catalyst drivers too (5.10). They are susposed to provide a decent boost in x800 series performance. Doubt it will do anything for 3DM01, but 05 may see a boost.

yep. Same here. i dont upgrade to bench - just when i need to. The 6600GT was showing its age. No doubt it was a great card, but having it over a year, I can tell it was starting to struggle. In NFS-U2 for example after a burnout when theres a lot of particle rendering, you can tell your FPS is very low, then it shoots up all of a sudden after the smokes dissapeared. None of that with this card :D TBH, games LOOK slightly better and run mcuh smother on this at the same settings (1280x1024, 4xaa, 8xaf)
Still not reinstalled doom 3 (for about 8 months now :D) so will run a timedemo later when i get back from school. Its 6 AM and i need to do my homework :stick:

Guys I decided to take the risk and flashed my 256mb Sapphire X800GTO Fireblade Edition video card with the modded X800GTO2 bios supplied in the techpowerup site. I flashed it with the atiflash in the dos screen. After booting windows recognized the card as x800/850 series and I reinstalled the drivers. Everything worked OK till there. However after I checked the card with rivatuner and ati tool, I saw that it's still at 12 pipes and I was really disappointed to see this result. So is this a laser cut gpu? Should it be hardmodded to activate the last quad of pipes? Or should I use flashrom instead of atiflash for this bios? Do you have any opinions about this matter?

did the max core check with ati tool , when i came back pc had froze , restarted and it said last good frequency 590 core , so i set it to that and scanned for artifacts which ran for 10 minutes ok so i moved to mem that settled at around 630 , will run some 3d mark later see what i get , not expecting much as i only have my x2 @ 2.5 on air at the moment

the timings arent supposed to allow you to get higher memory, the timings make the ememory more efficient, using the timings lower your mem till it dont artifact then do a 3dmark run, then after that apply stock timings and do another and see how much you gained from them

Nope. Tried that already. I had no difference in ocing performance. Initially i was on a akasa adater with 6 wires and connetors to 2 molexes. Now im on the adaptor that came with the card as it makes my case tidy :D

Nooooo. He's talking about the 6 pin pci-e connector that you plug into the socket at the top right corner of the card. If your PSU doesnt have such a connector, you need to use a 4 pin molex to 6 pin PCI-e adaptor like supplied with the card. But that adaptor only connects to one molex (3 wires) He was asking if an adaptor that connects to 2 molex connectors with5 wires would be more stable. Ill try to get a picture.....

(I think thats what he was asking...lol. Im not sure lol)

Does anyone actually know how to volt mod these cards? AFAIK Its tricky to do so with a pencil, but is possible. I really dont want to solder anything onto it... . If soldering is the only option, I wont bother because i dont think its worth the effort. Im at 579/615 MHz, but really want 600/615 or better :stick:

BTW, i checked the voltage with my multimeter. When Idle in windows, the vcore is a a solid 1.40 volts, but drops to 1.39 under load (3d mark, games, etc). Im thinking modding it to 1.45 volts will help and should be safe on stock cooling. Mine stays under 60*C at all times so heat isnt an issue at the moment :)

The PCB is EXACTLY the same, and the point where it says to measure to check the VGPU works here :). using a pencil however looks a bit dodgy :stick:

I voltmoded before. Did it to my 6600GT. using a pencil, went from 1.4 to 1.7 volts on the VGPU. Didnt help though. Just made my card run hotter, and when overclocked, artifacted like hell :D :stick:

I have tried 3 GTO2's so far. 2 of em were NOT stable at XTPE speeds (maybe coz of the tiny cooler) but 1 did make it and has not been anyslower than 540/590 since the time i flashed it (1min after i took her out of her box) :D!!!!!

I wish I could have activated my Sapphire X800GTO Fireblade Edition card's last four pipes. I got some nice results with just 12 pipes. I flashed the modded gto2 bios with flashom, the card accepted the bios but the four pipes haven't been activated. Here are the results
can you please tell me how i scored better than you in 3dmark05 with lower clocks and a 3000 venice (570/600 and i got 6950)

Probably, your floppy is borked. Try another floppy disc.

thats a bootable floppy right? reformat the floppy in windows, but select "make a boot disk (or something like that)" and then copy the flashrom and modded bios onto it :D

I think that 70° is the max, on my computer it's something like 60° max for memory and something like 50° for gpu.
You should cool better your graphic card in order to increase frequency, I mean in order not to be limited.. :)

You scored better than me in 3dmark 05 perhaps you have activated the last four pipes and make the card work with 16 pipelines. I just got the results with 12 pipes. And you know that the most important thing in 3dmark 2005 is the video card and not the cpu or ram

ATi recommends a maximum core temp of 105*C, but its best to stay below 75*C. you should start worrying at 80. With the stock HSF, mine never goes above 61*C at 579/615 MHz

Its absolutely silent in windows, and in games, its reasonably quiet. My volume is turned up anyway :D
