Is that on stock cooling? If so I wouldn't be surprised to see one or both do XT PE (or at least XT) speeds with appropriate cooling, like a VGA Silencer. ATI didn't go for the dual-slot solution for nothing.

Actually, for a stock solution, that looks pretty damn nice.... Copper GPU plate w/ total TIM coverage and ram module cooling to boot!

Obviously, for a nice OC, this will not do but thumbs up to Sapphire on this one. The GTO2 was truly a diamond in the rough before the horrible price gouging.

The one you're comparing to doesn't have an unlocked core.....BUT more MHz on the CPU making the scores close. Your higher Nature makes up for your slower CPU.

OK, I'm all set to vmod! I've got a day off work, a conductive pen, some 2b pencils, a multimeter, and a healthy apprehension about #$%ing with expensive electrical equipment.

I'm on water. Right now GPU @ 600MHz maxes out at 38-40C.

You calibrate pencil mod voltages with a multimeter, I'm guessing.

And Tedy -- I can arrange some pictures, but the one you posted above is exactly the same as mine. Same PCB, same stock HSF, same everything.

Yeah, I'm not so sure about the thermal "foam" they used, but the stock cooling solution actually isn't bad. With the copper core it's heavier and more effective than it looks. Of course, I only used it for about six minutes before slapping on a Maze 4.

Tedy, if I work up the balls to do the mod I'll definitely post some pics (of the inevitable flaming wreckage). I'm still trying to figure the risk/benefit ratio. I've already got a card that can do 7000+ in 3DM05, so I'm a bit hesitant to mess with it. I'm getting some GPU instability at 600+ and artifacting with the mem over 625; if a VGPU or VDIMM boost would likely push those numbers to 650/650 stable, and I don't feel like my liberal arts degree makes success impossible, I'll hit that @$#% like I was banana number two.

I did gain so far around 5°C cooler GPU/mem.....but in terms of overclocking i gained sorry to say pure :banana::banana::banana::banana:.......not even 10mhz GPU......something is holding these cards back.

well i decided to try the vgpu mod , set it to 1.45 ( was 1.4 stock idle ) and tweaked so it was near 1.45 load as it was dropping to 1.43 load. ran ati tool max core it got to 610 ( 590 without mod ) and the pc froze no artifacts or anything so im guessing it wants more juice still ! temps peaked at 56c in a 3d mark 05 run and i gained a couple of hundred points. it says on the vmod guide that 1.45 is max for air cooled anyone think 1.475 is pushing it? as my temps are still low. will try vdd soon

The Zalman Is SUPER Quiet compared to the blow dryer sound the Stock cooler makes.

I would suggest redoing the Core with Artic Silver 5 no matter what cooler you choose to use.

Mine had even more grey gunk on the core, so much it was trapping the heat, I couldn' do the OC'ing I can do now!

I was wondering if anyone else had ordered the gto2 from atacom. I ordered mine on the 10th and haven't recieved any shipping info yet, and the status on the site is, "active" and has nothing for the shipping info. I sent them an email a few hours ago, but haven't heard back yet.

Well folks i got my C3D GTO yesterday and unlocked to 16pipes and clocks 580/575 and got this score :woot: (no Artifacts)

I don't think so.. You should keep the X850 XT PE bios since it has better timings that let you have a better score at 3dmark.. :)

Guys I decided to take the risk and flashed my 256mb Sapphire X800GTO Fireblade Edition video card with the modded X800GTO2 bios supplied in the techpowerup site. I flashed it with the atiflash in the dos screen. After booting windows recognized the card as x800/850 series and I reinstalled the drivers. Everything worked OK till there. However after I checked the card with rivatuner and ati tool, I saw that it's still at 12 pipes and I was really disappointed to see this result. So is this a laser cut gpu? Should it be hardmodded to activate the last quad of pipes? Or should I use flashrom instead of atiflash for this bios? Do you have any opinions about this matter?

Here are my results from a little casual 3D today, I've been mostly benching SuperPi but I thought I'd test this new GTO2 out.

Stock unmodded card results with 12 pipes and then flashed to 16 pipes. No gpu mem timing tweaks. Results are pretty good for air but I think I'll sell this and wait for the x1800xt :)

I'm using it too, firstly i installed the gto2 modded bios, then i tried the sapphire x850xt pe bios and it worked fine, i think it can OC higher also! :eek: Maybe it was due to other reason but i could raise 5mhz core and 5mhz more to the memory.. Also i don't need the atitool installed to get higher freqs than stock... :p: ( tried to mod the gto2 bios changing his freqs but the bios editor got freeze when opening the bios file, not with older bios's )

BTW i can 3dmark @615/630 and 620/635 after changing bios.

Yes used the gto2 stock clocks wit 16 pipes bios. Those scores are with NO memory timing tweaks.

I didn't fine the card that loud and I was benching caseless ;)

I would get the gto2 without a doubt over the gto... there's no guarantee to flash the gto to 16 pipes while the gto2 is pretty much guaranteed from what I've seen.

Both cards are clocked at 400MHz core and 490MHz memory but we did find that the extra cooling on the Fireblade Edition seemed to help. The FE was increased to 581MHz core and 611MHz memory while the LE was increased to only 516MHz on the core and 590MHz on the memory.

Only R480 can achieve 581mhz on Air.

Only R480 can achieve 581mhz on Air.
i have a 480 and the ABSOLUTE MAX i can get is 570 on the core without causeing a system hang. and still they might have gotten a 480 but they are alot less frequent in the fireblades

Any reason you guys went with the VR mod instead of the pencil? If the VR has definite advantages I might give that a shot, but I'll probably need a new soldering iron -- the Cold Heat thing I've got is great for quickie jobs but it may not be precise enough.

Also, how necessary is it to remove the card from the system before working on it? I'll do it if the alternative is frying my rig, but it's a major PITA to swap a waterblock on and off six times.

i prefer the vr mod because its easier to fine tune the voltages , and once its on its permanently there till you remove it , pencil mod can degrade over time iirc.
i vmoded my old 9800xt whilst it was still in the case as i had water block and tec installed and was to lazy to mess around removing and then resealing it again.
but you may have a problem doing that to the gt02 with it still in the system as vdd mod the legs on the chip you need to solder are facing towards the motherboard so its hard to get to , and the vgpu is 2 tiny solder pads which are hard to get to whilst in the case.

Sorry to Hijack the thread but is there anyone here who has got a DMM with connectivity beeper handy as I got overexcited with my soldering iron and used too much solder :slap: . I have managed to get most off with solder wick but I want to check its ok before I switch her back on. I need to know if the connectivity beeper sounds when the bottom resistor pad and the test point are connected in the pic bellow

temp around twentt degrees... the vge is inside the case with just a 8x8 blowing from upside cause i'm full liquid cooled and i need somethin to get the hot air out of the case

Luck of the draw. These are unbinned R480 chips, so maybe yours would've been binned for an XT instead of an XTPE. Still, 565/600 for a $200 card is a sweet deal.

BTW, when ATITool shuts down your system, what happens exactly? Testing for max core, at 600 exactly my screen goes black and the system becomes unresponsive. Weird thing is, if I set the core to 615 or slightly higher manually, my rig will complete 3DM05 without issue.

Before the mod, I had 600/600 %100 stable based on looping 3dmark, playing FEAR for 6 hours, etc. This is on watercooling. Load temps were 40ish.

Did the Vgpu mod with a VR and set it at 1.60 to start. 650 on the core was a cakewalk. Things seem stable in most apps, but it crashes 3dmark03 randomly in the proxycon test. Just locks up... I dont think OVP is kicking in, but cant figure out what the problem is. Increasing voltage does not help. Temps are under 50 at load, up to 1.75vgpu.

At first, after the mod, the power regulation circuits got real hot, real fast. After putting a fan on it, they never get hotter than the core.

Now I know 3dmark03 is a bit more picky than other apps for max OC, but I am stumped here. Any ideas? I would be satisfied with 650/600 24/7 clocks (core probably has more if I wanted to run >1.65vgpu day to day), but I cant get 3dmark03 stable....

I have the same problem too... I had to lower my voltage and clock...i'm buying ViperJohn aircooler and i'll probably perform the IGPU (OVP bypass according to aMp)

I'll confirm for the ovp mod tonight...

Well, 600 on the mem is really about my max. For me, its not worth tweaking mem settings in ati tool for a few more mhz. I was happy with 600. ATI tool would actually cry foul on the memory around 612, but I set it to 600 for day to day stability.

I have always read that vmodding the mem isnt worth it. It can blow up easyily and gains just arent going to be that huge.

I am redownloading 3dmark03- I think I had an old build from when it was first released. I am hoping that will fix my problem. ATI Tool happily ran for an hour @ 650/600 so I am fairly confidant that my OC is not the problem.

Also- regarding the overvolt protection, there seems to be a lot of variance as to when this actually kicks in. Seems to be between 1.75 and 1.9 for most people. At 1.6ish I am nowhere near there.. so again I am thinking that is not the problem. Not to mention that 05 runs just fine (cant loop it to test however).

At 1.75Vgpu, the power regulators get HOT. Word of warning to anyone juicing there card to these levels- be sure you have good cooling on the front top and bottom half of the card (towards the DVI/VGA connectors).

I originally had 3 gto2s on order, one from atacom. I had ordered about 2 weeks ago. Yesterday I got the email of doom that said they werent expecting anymore to come in, so I canceled too. I talked to the lady a bit and she was up on the situation saying that x850 sales were getting canabalised and that lots of people had urged sapphire to end production of the gto2.

There are NO cheap deals on the GTO2 anymore. Newegg has them and you would have it in 3 days with no fuss, but they want $275 shipped. Seeing as you can get a 7800GT for $60-70 more, its not that great a deal. Hell, I paid $225 shipped and I am thinking the 7800GT may have been a better choice.

Anyhow- good luck to you in finding one. There very well could be a second supply of these coming down the pipes, but I somehow doubt it.

On the plus side, I think my core has a good chance of scaling to 680-700 mhz, so the net trade off is a good one.

can you put the x800gto² in the second pci-e slot because my temp of the NB went from 43°C idle up too 48°IDLE !!!

My core only does: 578mhz and the memory + tweaks only 560 :s

EDIT: After doing as5 on the graca my temp dropped about 10°C in idle, still need to check load and overclock.

I don't know if I get better scores but this bios clock higher ;) (cetainly better timings). It's 100% stable @ 600/615 (VGPU @ 1.46v loaded, VDD @ 2.2v, VDDQ @ 2.16v). Bench @ 620/630. Stock cooling with AS5 core/céramique memory...max temp = 62 after a few hours loop nature.
I'm buying ViperJohns extreme aircooling and should crank the volt @ 1.63-1.64v loaded :D

edit : ATItool artifacts free (haven't took a SS but...overnight @ 600/615)

u used a 20k VR? What resistance did you set it to? I thought insted of using a VR, ill try and use a 2B pencil :p but it didnt work :stick: - i just took it out of my rig to try lol.

The initial resistance between the solder pads is 436 ohms according to my multimeter....what resistance do you get (between the pads AND between the legs of the VR) at your current settings?

Try the GTO2 16p bios on techpowerup. Then use ATItool to see if the extra pipes opened up.

Right, i was using the bottom x16 slot for convenience. DFI was configured x8 x8 like in SLI mode, i went back to x16 x2

So x8 is defnitely not enough passed 7000 3Dmark05 points, my X800 XL that reached 6660 doesn't got this problem

ill see how far the temps go up with 1.5 i think and see if i get much more out the core.

Got a Sapphire x800gto² Lite.
Flashed it first with the bios on techpowerup.com.
Rebooted & opened atitool =>

That's right, no 16 pipes!!!!

Even flashed it with other x850xt (pe)'s biossen and still says 12 pipes.
Other tools like Everest also find and "x850pro" :(

So i guess it ain't a 100% guaranteed unlocking... :(

Yeah idd, that's why i included in the screenshot.

I flashed with atiflash: atiflash -f -p 0 newbios.bin (had to force it, coz first it gave me some mismatched error with the bios on techpowerup)

I now flashed it back with the oldbios and in desktop properties it says: gto (so not gto²).
Is this normal? Can anyone confirm this?
Or maybe they screwed up and got me a gto, allthough the box etc clearly states gto².
That way i can just get it replaces by a new one and try again :)
