ok, so what's the deal?
On an A64 with NO IHS, what will work better, TT BT with 80cfm fan or SI120 with 80cfm fan?? Which will cool better and which will fit the IHS-less CPU??

The TT Big Typhoon uses a screw down mount and will work fine without any mods on a naked core.
The SI120 will require lowering the mounting bracket by sanding off the spacer tabs.
IMO both will do a great job, the finish on the SI120 is better than the TT BT but knowing you your going to lap the hs anyway so doesn't really matter.

Having never used a screw down mount before, does one just finger tighten until tight ?
I've been waivering about the BT, I don't mind lapping, I'm just unsure of using the screw down mount. The results people are having with the BT are quite good. I have been looking at it as a good project/case mod.

I had the TT BT and tested against my XP120, it outperformed it ;)
You use a screwdriver, just don't over tighten and make sure you tighten both screws equally. Several people have modded the TT BT mount and used different screws and stuff that may work better than the factory hardware supplied. Do a search and see what you come up with.

This one is for others who seem to have mounting issues for their storm blocks, etc (will also work on Big typhoon :D ) Threaded rod screwed into standoff screwed into backplate.

I am using this for mine & my wife's (shorter pieces of rod and no springs for the TTBT) Just tighten snuggly/evenly, then go into bios @ defaults and tighten/adjust some more whilst looking @ teh temps in bios. My SOP now :fact: :hrhr:
Nice getting 600+ D2OL candies a day :D w/ 10.1 GHZ
/edit Oh and also epoxy the T-plate onto the actual sink so you don't have to fumble w/ it, and figure you WILL lay the case down so the the mounting is easier. Just DO IT!, and you will be done alot faster and easier. You can put it back up after the initial tightening b4 turning it on for tweaking as above.
Go look for some more of my notes on this in the cooling forums :fact:

Thanks Mad Mikee, I believe that I have come across your previous posts, especially regarding epoxing the T-bar to the HS. As with every project, I kind of get to that point of thinking through alittle too much and I should be doing at that point rather than just rethinking it. It sounds that once you tighten the screw mounts sufficiently for the BT, the BT will not move or pull forward when vertical.
Thanks for your insight.

Supporting the TTBT w/ some stiff foam (stuff that comes in pc stuff to protect it) drops temps by 1-2C since it does pull down a bit.
/edit - And yeah you want to lap it, very rough base.

Depending on the MB and case, the sink is heavy enough to put some torsional stress on the whole setup. This shows up as a temp rise as the HSF attempts to 'pull down and away' from the CPU. Tightening the HSF only helps to a point. To test if this helps, INTO THE BIOS TEMPS! :cheer2:, then while watching the temp, push STRAIGHT UP ( | ) on the outer edge of the HSF Fan (GENTLY!!!!!!!!!!) and see if the temps drop a bit.
If that works, find a way to do the same thing w/o having to keep your finger there (and no your brother is not steady enough to substitute :nono: )
This is easy in the LianLi PC-V series cases since the CPU is lower and the HSF is just above the bulkhead @ teh bottom. (Go look @ some of my pics in the WC gallery to se what I mean :D )
Also the HSF could be lifted from above (Zip-ties?)

Ok now I understad what you mean, the Big T is going in to a Antec sonata chassi if it fits whit my memory cooling, if not I need a bigger chassi
