With the sapphire x800gto² coming to the UK soon with the capabilities to be turned into something near the x850xt, i wondered whether or not to buy now or wait untill the new X1800 cards are released and hope for a price reduction of the old cards.

If anyone doesnt have any hard facts (i couldnt find any), then opinions would be appreciated.

the sapphire x800GTO2 is practically an x850XT so... that's $205USD shipped. I think that's pretty cheap :)

what's the diff between x800gto2 and a x800xl?

*edit* nm, i see that it has 12pp rather than 16pp, newegg's description was wrong.

Pipelines and clocks are the same, but the GTO2 uses the same R480 chip as the X850 XT. It's just slowed down by using a different BIOS, which is easily flashable.

The XL uses the 110nm R430, which won't clock to nearly the same speeds.

so in other words, if you're on a budget...the gto2 is the card to get right now? :)

Sorry for the double post, just saw your edit. The X800 GTO is a 12-pipe card, but Sapphire's GTO2 runs 16. Looks like ATI is really trying to offload its supply of high-end chips.

without a doubt. you will have to flash the bios on it though.

this reminds me when ati started relabeling 9800XTs as 9800 Pro with 256MBs, just a quick flash of the bios and your 9800 Pro turned into a full fledged 9800XT

i snapped up the radeon 9800pro with xt core and pcb, now i plan to do the same with the sapphire x800gto², but its dam expensive over here in the UK, £160, which is about $288 :slapass:

edit: i guess its a cheap x850xt tho
