View Full Version : Broken 7800GTX

Apparently I didn't insulate the upper side of my 7800 good enough. It was cooled by a 172W peltier at around 16.5V. Yesterday my screen went all weird and eventually stopped working altogether. I pulled out the card and found a bit of water on the top of the board. There also appeared to be some black areas which I think might represent burnt pcb.
I cleaned and dried the card but couldn't get a video signal from it so I decided to rma it. Well I shouldn't have used the arctic silver epoxy. Most of the ram sinks came off easy but I ended up pulling off a ram chip :(
Is there anything I can do with the card (other than a door-stop)?

This is what the top insulation looked like. I think the coverage was good enough as I never saw condensation around it but there must have been an area where the seal string wasn't completely covering the neoprene.

Don't understand why the burnt PCB... i had water like form all over my card because my cooling is more insense..all that happened to me was i had squigglies and such, never burns... i must be lucky? You modded it correct?

No burnt pcb. I just looked again and it was a small bit of seal-string. How often will water on the card actually cause permanent damage? It sure seemed to in this case where after drying it I couldn't get a signal at all.

I don't understand why you would want to RMA it, when it obviously was your own fault? Sorry, just my "Moral Compass" ;)

Grind it up and sell it as a hocus pocus cure for cancer?

I don't think it's possible to solder a ram chip - they have pins kinda like a cpu.
Also probably a lot of work to grind it up ;)
Maybe I'll frame is and hang it as a reminder to be more careful in the future.

u could try to epoxy the chip back on, get stock cooler on, and RMA, that might fly

let it dry out for a few days minimum

Well...if cinOxen can pass this card as defective, she/he has every right to get a new one IMO. We're talking about a card that has burn marks on it and missing a ram chip here. You can always RMA it but, that doesn't mean they're gonna replace it with a new one :D
Looks like a XFX card to me. I got two of those in my rig. cinOxen let us know how the RMA process go. If you get a replacement card, I'll go S&M on mines :D :D :D

I hear you bro. Check out my sig! :woot:

^^ sad and funny at the same time :) Nice memento
I'll try working on it again. The problem is the RAM chip is epoxied on the sink very well. The challenge will be to get it off without damaging the upper side of the chip. Hmmm, Just had an idea, maybe I'll soak it. I'll be sure to post with the results.
Cheers
